9 New Excel Features You Should Know: Enhancing Productivity for Professionals

In today's fast-paced world, Microsoft Excel continues to evolve, offering powerful new tools to streamline your workflow. Whether using Excel on Windows, 365, the web, or iPad, the latest features have something for everyone. Here’s a quick guide to nine exciting new updates that can transform how you work with data.

1. Check Performance for Large Workbooks

Dealing with large datasets often slows Excel down, but the new "Check Performance" feature in Excel for Windows helps optimize workbook speed. Previously available only on Excel for the web, this tool checks for unused formatting, metadata, and styles, ensuring faster performance. Just head to the Review tab, click "Check Performance," and Excel will optimize your workbook with just one click.

2. Show Details for Pivot Tables

Pivot tables are an essential tool for data analysis, and now Excel for Windows offers a "Show Details" option to dive deeper into the data behind the results. Selecting a specific value in a pivot table allows you to generate a new sheet with the underlying rows, offering a clearer picture of how the data was calculated.

3. Auto-Sync Form Results with Excel

One of the most requested features is now here: automatic syncing of Microsoft Forms results with Excel. No more manual refreshes! As responses come in, they will automatically update in Excel, giving you real-time insights without the extra effort.

4. Export to CSV in Excel for the Web

Exporting your data as CSV (Comma-Separated Values) is now simpler in Excel for the web. Go to the File menu, select "Export," and choose "Download as CSV." This feature has long been available in Excel for Windows and is now accessible for web users too.

5. Drag and Drop Improvements in Excel for the Web

Manipulating rows and columns has become more intuitive. Now, when you hover over a row or column, a "grippy" hand icon appears, allowing you to drag and drop effortlessly. Plus, holding the Shift key while dragging lets you replace existing data, providing more flexibility when working with large datasets.

6. Autofill Enhancements

Autofill has been improved for Excel on the web. You can now fill a series with just a drag of the mouse, and new on-object UI features make it easier to choose between copying cells or filling a series. Flash Fill is also available, automatically detecting patterns in your data and filling in the remaining rows with just a click.

7. Pasting Improvements in Excel for the Web

Excel for the Web now offers enhanced paste options similar to its Windows counterpart. After copying and pasting data, a floating toolbar lets you choose whether to paste values, formulas, formatting, or link to the source. Right-click options and special paste functions give you even more control over your data.

8. Direct Sheet Links in Excel for the Web

If you’re collaborating on large workbooks, sending colleagues directly to the relevant sheet is now possible. Simply right-click a sheet tab, copy the link, and share it. When clicked, the link will open directly to the specific sheet, saving time and avoiding confusion.

9. Pivot Table Support for Excel on iPad

Creating and editing pivot tables is now easier on the iPad. The interface offers the familiar Excel experience, allowing you to add fields, sort, and rearrange data with ease. Whether you're on the go or working from your iPad, this feature makes advanced data analysis more accessible.

These new features are just a glimpse of how Excel is continually evolving to meet the needs of professionals like you. Whether you’re managing large datasets, collaborating with teams, or just looking to work smarter, these updates are designed to improve your productivity. Be sure to explore these features, and if you're passionate about Excel like I am,

I have used the Performance optimisation feature and it has made big difference to many of my spreadsheets. despite having 32GB memory, excel still says can't display because many spreadsheets are open. There should be an advisory function for reducing font usage.
