The 9 Most Exciting Video Games
A new year means new?video games ?to look forward to, and 2023 is shaping up to be a pretty exciting year for fans of video games. Here’s a list of some of the ones we’re most looking forward to.
THEATRHYTHM FINAL BAR LINE - FEBRUARY 16
It’s a rhythm game. Featuring?Final Fantasy ?music. Is further explanation even necessary?
Square Enix ?games feature some of the best music ever, so knowing that this game will feature almost 400 tracks makes this game a necessary buy for anyone who enjoys listening to Square games as much as they love playing them. The full game drops February 16, but there is a free demo available now on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
RESIDENT EVIL 4 - MARCH 23
Resident Evil ?4?is hailed as one of the best video games of all time, so when?Capcom ?remade?Resident Evil 2?and?Resident Evil 3, general consensus was that they had to be working up to a remake of?RE4. Needless to say, when the announcement trailer finally dropped at State of Play last June, complete with a release date, fans were overjoyed.
Every glimpse that Capcom gives of this game just stokes the fervor even higher; the game is absolutely gorgeous and the gameplay looks like it’s been updated for this new console generation while still keeping the action hero vibes that the original is known for.?Leon S. Kennedy ?and his iconic leather jacket will be available on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC on March 23.
HORIZON FORBIDDEN WEST: BURNING SHORES - APRIL 19
The Frozen Wilds?was a beautiful follow-up to the 2017 breakout success?Horizon Zero Dawn , so if Guerrilla’s track record is anything to go by,?Horizon Forbidden West : Burning Shores?is sure (heh!) to be a compelling follow-up to what was already an incredible gaming experience. All we know about the DLC is that?Aloy ?is headed to Hollywood! The announcement trailer shows Aloy soaring above post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, complete with flowing lava and what looks like a very angry Horus machine ready to cause problems. The next leg of the journey to save the world – again – starts on April 19 on PlayStation 5.
THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: TEARS OF THE KINGDOM - MAY 12
Yet another iconic franchise sees a sequel coming out this year. The highly anticipated sequel to 2017’s Game of the Year-winning?The Legend of Zelda : Breath of the Wild?has been in the works for a while, but Nintendo was disturbingly silent regarding any updates about the game for years.
Fans got a small teaser trailer at E3 in 2021, but the game’s title and release date were officially announced at last September’s Nintendo Direct, to much excitement.?The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom?appears to be just as beautiful as its predecessor, but details of?Link’s ?newest adventure remain a mystery. Its release on May 12 will probably be the biggest drop Nintendo has this year.
SUICIDE SQUAD: KILL THE JUSTICE LEAGUE - MAY 26
The talented folks at Rocksteady Studios are a little bit familiar with?DC Comics ?and its characters. They’re the team behind?Batman: Arkham Asylum?(2009),?Batman: Arkham City?(2011), and?Batman: Arkham Knight?(2015). Sound familiar?
The announcement trailer for?Suicide Squad : Kill the?Justice League ?dropped at DC Fandome in 2021, and the game was originally scheduled to come out last year. Rocksteady has since pushed the game back, confirming a new release date for May 26. The story takes place in the same universe as the?Arkham?games and is set after?Arkham Knight. Notably,?Kill the Justice League?features?Kevin Conroy’s ?final performance as?Batman . The legendary voice actor died this past November from cancer.

MARVEL’S SPIDER-MAN 2 - FALL 2023
2018 was a fantastic year for games, and part of the reason for that is?Marvel’s ?Spider-Man ?from Insomniac Games.?Marvel’s Spider-Man:?Miles Morales , the expansion that came out in 2020, was just as phenomenal, so it makes sense that fans everywhere were hyped for the next mainline entry. The surprise teaser that dropped in September 2021 showed Peter and Miles fighting together and featured voiceover from iconic Spidey villain?Kraven the Hunter .
However, the most exciting part of the trailer was arguably the two-second glimpse of?Venom ?— one of the most popular and well-known characters in Marvel’s catalog. There isn’t much more information about the sequel just yet, but Sony has confirmed that the game will drop as a PS5 exclusive some time in the fall.
LIES OF P - 2023
Lies of P?is what might have happened had From Software consulted with?Guillermo del Toro ?to make a game and not?George R. R. Martin . Developer NEOWIZ released gameplay footage in one of the more exciting trailers to premiere at the Game Awards this past December, and wow! The art direction in this game is stunning, the environments are gorgeous, and the story seems just as mysterious and intriguing as you’d expect a Soulsborne game to be.
Apparently players will control?Pinocchio , presumably on a quest to become human, as he travels through a dark and deadly city to find Mr. Geppetto.?Lies of P?doesn’t have a definitive release date, but it will be playable on PS5, Xbox, and Steam.
THE WOLF AMONG US 2 - 2023
Oh, Bigby Wolf, you have been missed.
There’s something fun about re-contextualizing classic fairy tales in a new, modern way.?The Wolf Among Us?took characters from fables – and also from the?DC Comics ?series?Fables?– and plopped them in an episodic murder mystery with Mr. Big Bad himself as sheriff.
A decade after the game’s initial release, the developers at the new and improved Telltale Games are finally getting the chance to pick up Bigby’s story in this sequel. All we know so far is that?TWAU?season 2 takes place six months after the events of the first game and that it looks just as pretty as ever. The game will release on all consoles and on PC later this year.
FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH - WINTER 2023(ISH)
The Final Fantasy VII 25th Anniversary stream last June seemed like the perfect occasion to announce something about the second part of the?Final Fantasy ?VII Remake?project. Luckily, Square Enix agreed, and fans were treated to a teaser trailer for the next installment of the remake project.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth?is the second part in what Square confirms is a trilogy, and surprisingly, the developer even provided an approximate timeframe for the game’s release. Whether “next winter” means late 2023 or early 2024 is anyone’s guess at this point. Regardless of release date, it’s certain this next entry, in one of the most iconic franchises in video game history, is among the most highly anticipated releases in recent memory.
Did we miss anything? What are you most looking forward to playing this year?
