9 insights for practitioners from research papers

If you are going to read a scientific publication for any reason as a practitioner, you should at least gain these 9 insights. This post is particularly relevant for early career researchers and necessary for aspiring consultants.

Scientific publications usually include a title, abstract, introduction, literature review, methodology, results, discussion, conclusion, and references.

The methods section is often ignored yet is one of the most relevant, especially for consultants and specialists.

1. The title in one sentence indicates what the publication is about. This is the first indicator to practitioners whether it contains what interests them or not.

2. The abstract is the briefest way for a practitioner to know what the whole paper is about and might contain some answers but may require further reading into the paper for details

3. From the introduction, practitioners gain general insights on issues that the publication intends to contribute to resolving.

4. The literature review signals to the practitioner other related publications that exist for potential reading and how far said issues in the introduction have been re/solved.

5. Practitioners can use methods from research to solve other problems including in consultancies. Sometimes the method sections also have data collection tools that can be useful for doing consultancies.

6. Findings show practitioners the contribution of the current publication in resolving answers to issues it set to.

Practitioners can contextualize the solutions to their conditions and relate them to other research on similar issues.

7. Discussion demonstrates to practitioners multiple ways that the findings can be interpreted and within which limits. This is also useful for practitioners who aim to contextualize the findings in other contexts.

8. Conclusions can inform practitioners of the key answers to the questions the publication sought to address in a snapshot.

9. For practitioners, the references are further links to other papers that talk about the same problem to different extents.

Why not apply this while reading in this paper?
