9 great things to do in Bratislava, Slovakia

Bratislava is an unexplored hidden gem of Central Europe. This city is vibrant, welcoming and ready to unveil its best sides. It has its own character and its own pace. And there are plenty of great things to do!

Let me share with you the 9 great things to do in Bratislava, Slovakia!

1. Walking around the Old Town

Old Town of Bratislava is a charming part of the city full of beautiful street views, ancient picturesque corners and colorful buildings. It is a mix of architectural styles and a fascinating place to explore. Stroll along the magnificent old streets and take lots of great pictures. Don't forget to enter the splendid St. Martin's Cathedral - one of the most important churches in Slovakia!

2. Enjoying the views from the Old Town Hall

Visit the noteworthy Bratislava City Museum and climb to the most scenic point of the Old Town - the tower of the Old Town Hall. It is one of the best places in the city to enjoy the cityscape. From there you can observe the bird view of the narrow streets of the Old Town as well as the iconic Castle along with the grandiose St. Martin's Cathedral.

3. Exploring the splendid Bratislava Castle

You can recognize the city panorama of Bratislava quite easily. Wherever you go you see the grandiose white-walled Bratislava Castle proudly observing the city mightily perched on a hill. It is the symbol of Bratislava and its most striking landmark. It is definitely a must to hike up to the top (or take a local bus) and enjoy the views as well as explore the newly restored royal halls of the Castle devoted to the history of Slovakia.

4. Admiring the Art Nouveau Blue Church

Bratislava has something other European cities don't. It has a magnificent blue church designed in the best traditions of the Art Nouveau architecture. It is a masterpiece of the celebrated Hungarian architect ?d?n Lechner and a sight you definitely don't want to miss while in Bratislava.

5. Trying bryndzové halu?ky

Slovak cuisine is simple, delicious and affordable. Its highlight is the bryndzové halu?ky - very tasty potato dumplings with sheep cheese. So take this information and head to the one of the many traditional restaurants to sample this Slovak culinary delight. For a better experience start with kapusnica (sauerkraut soup) and have a traditional makovník (poppy seed roll) for a dessert.

6. Going to the top of the UFO Bridge

Right in the middle of the Danube river, you can spot an enormous bridge with a UFO-like design. It is one of those love-it-or-hate-it sights that divides opinions. Built during the communist times, its construction put a part of the Old Town in debris for the new road that now divides the historic core of the city in a half. What you can't argue about though is the view from the platform on the top of the bridge. It is breathtaking and there you see absolutely everything. Definitely a thing to do!

7. Be fascinated by the ruins of the Devin Castle

Hop on a bus 28 from the SNP Bridge taking you to the symbolic place for Slovakia. In half an hour you find yourself next to glorious ruins to once-mighty Devin Castle. Set above the Danube river it proudly protects the border between Slovakia and Austria as well as reminds us of the rich history of this land. Enjoy the panoramic river views and explore the ancient ruins surrounded by idyllic rural landscapes.

8. Museum hopping

Bratislava has a great selection of museums to choose from. Admire the Slovak classic art at the Slovak National Gallery, see the Slovak modern art in the beautifully designed Nedbalka Gallery and Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum. Continue your visit with exploring wonderful interiors of the Primatial Palace and going to the Museum of Arts in the St. Michael's Tower (offering great Old Town views from its top). There are 30 specialized museums and galleries in Bratislava so you have many interesting things to see and do while you're in the Slovak capital.
