These days, disruption is the M.O. in the world of work, but you have an opportunity to influence how you and your organization embrace and even initiate disruption. Every year I publish my list of trends that impact personal branding, career success and talent development. For 2020 and beyond, there are nine key trends that will significantly affect your success as a career-minded professional and the success of your people if you’re an HR or talent development professional.
In this series of nine LinkedIn articles, I’ll take a deep dive into each of the nine trends—one per article.
In this installment, we’ll take a look at Trend #8. Digital Dexterity
The one skill that everyone needs to master, regardless of your company’s industry or your job function or title, is digital dexterity. It’s likely that your company’s competitive advantage will come from digital innovation. Companies know that to be competitive, they need a workforce that is digitally enabled and enabling because the most visible innovations emerge from technology—and from employees who know how to translate high tech into a high-impact experience for customers. That means you may need to disrupt your own role and create new, higher-level responsibilities, driven by digital expertise.
Say this three times fast:
Demonstrate digital dexterity or be dismissed.
Whether you’re working in marketing, accounts payable, or legal, you need to bulk up your digital muscle, knowing which developments—from artificial intelligence and robotics to data analytics and new social media platforms—can become valuable assets for you and your team.
HR and talent development has a dual role. On one hand, you need to continually dialogue with internal leadership to identify what your company’s current digital-training needs are, while staying informed about the most effective ways to deliver that digital learning. At the same time, you’re responsible for recruiting talent that has a mindset of both disruption and digital fitness. It may seem like a tall order, but the digital age itself has developed unlimited solutions.
Stay tuned to this series for articles on all nine trends. They are:
1. Nexting?
9. YOUcasting?
