These days, disruption is the M.O. in the world of work, but you have an opportunity to influence how you and your organization embrace and even initiate disruption. Every year I publish my list of trends that impact personal branding, career success and talent development. For 2020 and beyond, there are nine key trends that will significantly affect your success as a career-minded professional and the success of your people if you’re an HR or talent development professional.

In this series of nine LinkedIn articles, I’ll take a deep dive into each of the nine trends—one per article.

In this installment, we’ll take a look at Trend #5. Treadmill Learning?

You can’t stand still on a treadmill that’s in motion. If you don’t keep moving forward, you’ll fall off the back and be left behind. The same is true of learning in the new world of work. If you aren’t actively learning every day, you’ll quickly lose relevance and reduce your ability to innovate. The days of relying on your company to give you all the learning opportunities you need to succeed are long gone. Much of the responsibility—and opportunity—has been switched to you. And the speed of change in the workplace demands that you make learning a deliberate daily activity.

In The Expertise Economy, Degreed CLO Kelly Palmer says, “Learning needs to be customized for each individual based on their skill and knowledge gaps, personal and professional goals, and specific interests.” That means it’s your responsibility to determine what and how to learn. And it’s your responsibility to apply that learning to your work. After all, learning without action has little result.

If you’re in HR or are a talent development professional, you’re already at the helm of these initiatives. As the link between continual learning and a company’s competitive edge has never been more vital and visible, you have an unprecedented opportunity to demonstrate the value you deliver. Provide a broad variety of options and encouragement to integrate learning into employees’ daily actions. Aim for learning experiences that make your people engage in treadmill learning like this:

When you build a culture of continual learning, you engage your people and ensure they have the skills needed to contribute to the organization in an impactful way. That will increase retention and move your entire organization forward.

Stay tuned to this series for articles on all nine trends. They are:

1.  Nexting?

2.  Flextrapreneurship?

3.  Digital First

4.  Brandscaping?

5.  Treadmill Learning?

6.  Digital Advocacy

7.  Distance Branding

8.  Digital Dexterity

9.   YOUcasting?

I agree with your observations, William. Gone are the days when learning could only happen in the classroom. As you've put it, L&D professionals will have to get more creative in designing learning activities which integrate with employee daily actions.
