These days, disruption is the M.O. in the world of work, but you have an opportunity to influence how you and your organization embrace and even initiate disruption. Every year I publish my list of trends that impact personal branding, career success and talent development. For 2020 and beyond, there are nine key trends that will significantly affect your success as a career-minded professional and the success of your people if you’re an HR or talent development professional.

In this series of nine LinkedIn articles, I’ll take a deep dive into each of the nine trends—one per article.

In this installment, we’ll take a look at Trend #3. Digital First.

Like it or not, Google is in charge of first impressions these days.

We live in a relationship economy, where influencing others is essential for being able to make things happen. When people (your boss, employees, colleagues, clients, business partners, etc.) want to learn about you, a browser is opened, a name is typed in, and a virtual first impression is revealed.

If your initial impression is anemic or inauthentic, you’re squandering opportunities and will be left behind. Managing your digital brand is a career essential. I call it he-surfing or she-surfing, and it’s a phenomenon that’s here to stay. The good news is that your LinkedIn profile will likely show up at the top of a search on your name. So managing your first impression is not that hard when you’re willing to build an authentic and stellar LinkedIn profile.

In the old days, employers never encouraged their people to create a strong LinkedIn profile (that was only for people who were looking to jump ship, right?). Now it’s the opposite: Professionals need to make a great digital first impression, and all team members are potential digital brand ambassadors, so they need first-class coaching on honing their online presence.

In his eye-opening book, Ctrl Alt Delete, digital media expert Mitch Joel speaks of a digital-first posture. He acknowledges that the web is often the first place we go when we want to learn about something—or someone. If your initial impression is anemic or inauthentic, you’re squandering opportunities and will be left behind. Personal branding has become digital branding, and managing your digital brand is a career essential. And it starts right here with LinkedIn. Many professionals go directly to LinkedIn to research you and your team. And even those who start at Google will likely end up at your LinkedIn profile because it will show up at the top of a search on a name.

Proactively building and maintaining your digital brand is not frivolous or egocentric; it’s a career essential.

If you’re in HR or talent development, helping your people build their brand in bits and bytes (from providing headshots to keyword training) and engaging them as digital brand ambassadors will help them increase their success while delivering greater value to your company.

Stay tuned to this series for articles on all nine trends. They are:

1.  Nexting?

2.  Flextrapreneurship?

3.  Digital First

4.  Brandscaping?

5.  Treadmill Learning?

6.  Digital Advocacy

7.  Distance Branding

8.  Digital Dexterity

9.   YOUcasting?
