RECONMATIC
RECONMATIC is a #HorizonEurope Research & Innovation Action project for sustainable construction waste management.
In this issue, we bring you the latest project updates, including two upcoming Open Days in March, new scientific publications on DIMS and hyperspectral imaging, and exciting collaborations with Latin America. Stay informed, get involved, and help us drive innovation for a more circular construction industry!
This March, RECONMATIC is opening its doors in two European cities to drive the conversation on circularity in construction?
Are you eager to explore best practices, innovative solutions, and key strategies for making the construction industry more sustainable and efficient? Join us at a RECONMATIC Open Day and be part of the change! Can’t attend? Follow #RECONMATICOpenDays for event highlights.??
Co-organised with the TEE TKM under the auspices of the Department of Civil Engineering at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) .
Speakers: Katerina TSIKALOUDAKI , Ioannis Koutsos , Ilias Dimitriadis, Theodoros Theodosiou , Kostas Choumas , Maria Stefanidou , Evangelos Manthos , Lefteris Anastasiou .
?? RECONMATIC Open Day?in Madrid, Spain, on March 13, 2025?(More information coming soon—don’t miss an update on our website).

Open Call to Stakeholders: Contribute to a Glossary for Circularity in Construction?
As sustainability and circular economy practices grow in construction, so do new terms—but interpretations vary. To bridge this gap, RECONMATIC has created a glossary with 242 key terms on construction, demolition waste, and circularity.?
WASTEie Initiative Concludes with Final Release?
The WASTEie initiative has officially wrapped up with the release of its fifth and final instalment! Read the final release and learn more about the logic behind the WASTEie data dictionary.?
RECONMATIC partners Vitalij Tetervov and Chris Crookes from BIMBox reflect on this milestone:?
As part of the RECONMATIC project, our goal has always been clear: to standardise construction and demolition (C&D) waste management data. Throughout this series, we have explored how digital transformation and openBIM standards can streamline material reuse and recycling across the construction sector.?From the initial exploration of waste streams, to the creation of a robust process map, and finally to the development of an information management framework, we have laid a solid foundation for the future of sustainable construction waste management. Now, it is time to focus on what lies ahead for WASTEie.
Digitally preserving the historic Werkarena hockey stadium in T?inec, Czech Republic—before its demolition?
Utilising a blend of advanced scanning technologies, including laser scanners, SLAM technology, and drone-based photogrammetry, the RECONMATIC team has successfully captured the intricate details of this steel-concrete structure.
RECONMATIC at Czech Researchers' Night 2024?
On 27 September 2024, the RECONMATIC partner, Czech Technical University in Prague, coordinated the annual Czech Researchers' Night, drawing 1,288 visitors. Representing RECONMATIC, project Jan Valentin and Václav Ne?erka delivered two insightful lectures. The RECONMATIC project also offered the public a unique opportunity to see how old structures and materials can be transformed into innovative solutions through recycling and digital technology.
Scientific publications??
In 2025, our partners from ?eské vysoké u?ení technické v Praze and The University of Salford have already contributed two significant scientific papers to the field of construction and demolition waste management, with two more on the way following successful abstract publications in the conference proceedings.?
?? Design Science Research for Digital Information Management System (DIMS) in Construction and Demolition Waste Management authored by Ali Nader Saad .??
?? Using hyperspectral imaging to identify optimal narrowband filter parameters for construction and demolition waste classification - authored by Václav Ne?erka , Tomá? Zbíral , and Stanislav Vítek.?
Latest on our blog?
?? Actions for the Implementation of Industrial Symbiosis. What if companies and industries could work together to reduce waste, lower costs, and minimise their environmental impact? This is the promise of #IndustrialSymbiosis—an innovative approach where one company's by-products become valuable resources for another. Dive deeper into this concept in a comprehensive article by RECONMATIC partner Mónica Vicent Cabedo , a researcher at ITC - Instituto de Tecnología Cerámica .?
?? Unlocking the Potential of Revalorized Materials for a Circular Future. Revalorising materials in the construction and demolition sectors is key to advancing sustainability. By adopting circular economy principles, we can minimise waste, enhance recycling, and make better use of resources.?Explore their potential in an article by Carmen Devesa Fernández , Director of Innovation and Internationalisation, and Silvia Fernández Marín , Technical Director—both from AEICE Clúster de Hábitat Eficiente (ES), a partner organisation in the RECONMATIC project.?
Circular Construction Cluster: Strengthening ties with Latin America?
In 2024, RECONMATIC and the #CircularConstructionCluster (CCCluster) established a strategic liaison with Latin America. This collaboration aims to enhance communication, mutual understanding, and knowledge exchange on circular construction advancements across regions.?Learn more about this collaboration in an interview with Julián Ospina , Director of Sustainability at Camacol Antioquia , the Colombian Chamber of Construction in Antioquia comments:
"By participating in initiatives like the CCCluster, CAMACOL’s primary goal is to facilitate knowledge exchange and inspire its affiliated companies to embrace new market opportunities where circular economy principles play a central role." - Julian Ospina.
?? Join the Circular Construction Cluster! We invite European projects, academic institutions, start-ups, and industry leaders to collaborate in advancing circular solutions for the construction sector. Be part of a network that scales impact, fosters knowledge exchange, and drives innovation. Get in touch with Georgia Nikolakopoulou from Future Needs , who is leading the cluster activities, to discuss the details.??
Tech4EUconstruction Cluster at Hannover Messe 2025?
The #Tech4EUconstruction Cluster will be presented at Hannover Messe 2025 – "ENERGIZING A SUSTAINABLE INDUSTRY" from 31 March to 4 April 2025. RECONMATIC, along with other cluster members ( BEEYONDERS , HumanTech , InCUBE Project EU , RoBétArmé Project Horizon Europe , BIM2TWIN , HeronEUProject , Reincarnate ) will be featured in the dissemination materials, showcasing innovative solutions for sustainable construction.?
