Red flags differ for everyone based on their current situation and mindset.
You might be ok with toiling on weekends at a younger age but the same factor can become a no-no in the later years of your career.
While that holds true on situational front, a lot of factors hold true on all fronts of employment i.e. these red flags should not be missed.
Here is a comprehensive list of red flags to keep handy during your next job search:
- High Employee Turnover: This is a complete no-brainer. People leave companies for various reasons but if most of them leave a company too early or just when the sun sets on the second day of their job then you should definitely stay away from this company. I helped my mentee spot this in one of the prospective employers by conducting an assessment of company's talent turnover on LinkedIn Insights.
- Only promises and absence of written commitments: If "it" isn't given in writing then it will never happen.
- "You join us now at X salary and we will increase it after six months to Y" which loosely translates to "we cannot assure Y at the moment but in the future we might think of it" and of course, point 2 proves itself to be true here again.
- Recruitment processes which are: lengthy + only focused on how they can benefit from your talent + one way communication only + ghosting + rude + hurdles which should get you a national level honor award = you run!
- Culture that is based on values which you do not support i.e. overworking is common, burnout is real but to be hidden, "we are a family and your actual family holds no value for us" are few of them.
- Lack of mental health compliance policies.
- Ninja expectations.
- And the worst: expectation of work on holidays, festivals and on personal days off.
