86th in the world. We can do so much better than this. It's time to move on and up.

86th in the world. We can do so much better than this. It's time to move on and up.

It is time to move forward again. And up the ECI listings. It can be done.

We just need to dial down the internal competition in Australia, between parties, regions, councils and states, and dial up competition and collaboration with the world.

This election offers a chance to reset the nation and move forwards together.

Because together we can do much, much, more than we have so far.

Keep throwing stones and we will remain in our position of 86th in the world for economic complexity - lagging Kazakhstan, Kenya and Albania, and just ahead of Uzbekistan, Cambodia and Mali.

Despite being the 8th richest country in the world.

Japan, Switzerland, Germany, South Korea, Singapore lead the world. We can do so much better than 86th.

We have the mineral and intellectual resources. And we can use them wisely to become a value adding country creating products and services that can be used domestically and exported to the world.

It can be done.?

By using the technologies and innovations generated from the mining industry, CSIRO and our universities - autonomous off-road vehicles, AI, robotics, drones, medtech, cleantech etc and expanding their use into defence, agritech, space, pollution control, energy, water and other sectors...

Many of these technologies have application for export, aged care, disability services, agriculture, aquaculture, defence, housing and so on.

Opportunity galore.

We have the brains and the resources.

It doesn't matter who won on Saturday. It only matters that we can all win, if we collaboratively leverage the enormous capability we have here.

Exciting possibilities. It can be done. So let’s do it.

Hi John While I admire your optimism- and your enthusiasm - I can't agree with your premise that Australia can somehow magically and instantly 'improve' something that has languished so badly for decades. The sort of competency required for such a transformation long ago left industry, and the public service. Therefore, this country no longer has the needed skills to be able to design, develop, and execute far more competent systems of innovation, and re-design the government model of innovation to do what you suggest. (A bit like Elvis - competency has 'left the building' - and is not coming back) Witness the Global Innovation index results over the past 9 years. Australia has declined from 16th to 25th in the world - while at the same time China has risen from 84th to 12th. Clearly, one country is doing innovation wrong - and one country is doing innovation right. Averaged over the past 9 years we are 3rd in the world at creating ideas - but 40th in the world (last among developed countries) at putting those ideas into the hands of a user. This situation is the result of 30 years of decline in innovation competency and performance. And that will not be turned around easily.

We can get a lot done this year. After experiencing almost a decade of inaction on economy, innovation, export, climate action, future of work and jobs...it is refreshing to be able to address some (or even all) of the "wicked problems" that we face at long last. Kicking them down the road does not remove "wicked problems", it just allows them time to get bigger. And that is what has happened. There is a lot to do. But together and collaboratively we can do it.
