  • A jobseeking horror story about a rescheduling recruiter
  • Why, from a recruiting POV, having more info on your resume is better than less
  • The best (worst?) job posting of the week
  • A scam involving a real company and a fake email address
  • And in the Affiliates section, there’s a sale for 40% off Coursera Plus with my link!

And for Premium subscribers I’m:

  • Giving you advice on how to determine whether or not a remote job posting is actually remote
  • How to improve your interview prep
  • Answering a Premium subscriber's question about applying for jobs when you have an untraditional career path. I’ll explain the thought process behind how business owners and fractional professionals can highlight their value to combat biases.

SHAMELESS PLUG

If your job search needs a little more help, Karpiak Consulting offers resume and LinkedIn services, as well as job search strategy coaching.

Who knows…maybe it’ll help you frame your responses better in job interviews and land a job like this person????♂?

How did I help this resume review client (and Premium Newsletter Subscriber) end their 9-month job search?

Resumes have the most impact when they are focused and provide context. Although this resume contained strong experience, it was overly generic and lacked specific details about the impact of the candidate's actions.

Why is more information better than less? Several reasons:

A focused resume shows that you understand the job requirements and indicates to employers that you clearly understand what the job entails, allowing employers to quickly grasp your qualifications and relevance to the role.

Recruiters often spend only a few seconds initially scanning resumes, so a targeted resume can make a strong first impression by immediately showcasing relevant qualifications, increasing the likelihood of being shortlisted. This allows recruiters to quickly see how you meet their needs. If they don't see context related to the job requirements and skills on the resume, they may assume your experience isn't strong enough and that you aren't a suitable match.

By providing context and specific examples, you offer clear evidence of your value. Explaining the context of your achievements helps employers understand how you accomplished them and provides a clearer picture of your capabilities.

Not sure how to focus your resume for the jobs you’re targeting?

I can help with that :)

PREMIUM SUBSCRIBER QUESTION

Early in my career, I founded and grew a company over 19 years. We closed in 2010, mainly due to the fallout from the Great Recession. I have been an independent consultant since that time. I am currently a fractional executive director for a nonprofit.

My resume must scream RISK to every recruiter and hiring manager who sees it. Do you have any advice for me regarding landing a FT role?
