How did I help this resume review client?
I taught them how to transform the general background presented on their resume into a focused document that highlights their relevance and value with context.
Resumes are not just records of past jobs; they are marketing documents intended to demonstrate to the reader, usually a recruiter, how your background and skills align with a particular role.
When a resume is too general and includes too much information, it can actually harm your chances:
1) Accomplishments are important, but employers also need to understand your specific skills and job duties. Achievements prove your impact, but your experience and duties prove you are a good match for the role.
2) Vague resumes often don't match the job posting you are applying for. Tailoring your resume to the specific job you're applying for is crucial. A vague resume that is not customized doesn't highlight the most relevant experience and skills for the position, reducing your chances of being selected for an interview.
3) Recruiters look for more than just keywords related to computer programs and industries. They are interested in the skills mentioned in the job posting and want to see how you used these skills. Simply listing phrases like "project management" in a Core Competency section has limited impact. Employers need to understand exactly what you did in your previous roles. Clear, specific descriptions help them understand your responsibilities and the context of your work....and land interviews.
Not sure how to effectively communicate your qualifications and create a focused resume?

PREMIUM SUBSCRIBER QUESTION
I recently re-wrote my resume and incorporated 2 new sections.
After tailoring my (revamped) resume for a specific job, I ran it through [a service selling ATS optimization]. It seems that these 2 sections weren't recognized.
I've read that some or all ATS systems look for a predetermined list of sections. This begs the question: Will most ATS systems scan information only within the sections they recognize, or will they scan any and all words?
