80% = 100% - A new equation to avoid decision paralysis

80% = 100% - A new equation to avoid decision paralysis

When it comes to decision making as an entrepreneur, apply some new math.?The equation is simple…. 80% = 100%.?Let me explain.

Big decisions are hard, and pulling the trigger often comes with so much fear, analysis and second guessing that some of the best decisions don’t ever get made. This indecision is a decision itself – essentially you are deciding that the status quo is ok. But often living with the status quo is like gorging on comfort food you know you should avoid - but it feels so safe.

Think about this for a moment. How often in your professional or personal life have you been 80% certain of something, acted, and found that your decision turned out to be wrong? When I ask clients this question, most people can barely name any examples.

The follow-up question gets a different response. How many times have you been 80% sure of something and missed the window of opportunity because you gut stuck in the quicksand of trying to achieve absolute certainty before committing? If you’re like most people I share this with, I have probably struck a nerve. Some examples to refresh your memory:

  • That nagging people issue that you have over-thought for months.
  • That new product offering that a competitor wound up beating you to.
  • That candidate who signed on somewhere else because their offer came in before you could decide.

One of the greatest things about being an entrepreneur is the ability to act fast and adapt faster. This is where the 80% = 100% equation is so critically important. If you read this and it hit home, always operate with the confidence that when you are 80% sure a decision is right, you are 100% sure you should act on it. There is an exceedingly high probability your decision will be the right one, and with the right success metrics in place you can quickly either adapt or revisit the decision on the rare occasion you go down a path you realize was the wrong one. Again, that’s the absolute beauty of being an entrepreneur.

So, decide. Act. You’ve got this!
