#8 What do we mean by 'Web3'? (click here to find out...)

Welcome to?Edition #8 of 'This Week in Web3' - an all-in-one source for the most interesting Blockchain, Web3 and Metaverse content on LinkedIn, as curated by?me! If you didn't catch these awesome posts, here's a quick recap...

????♂? What Does Web3 Even Mean?...

Condensing a domain as broad as the decentralised internet (and its constituent principles, technologies and participants) was never going to be easy...

?? It started with 'Crypto' (which made us think of Bitcoin)

?? Then it was 'Blockchain' (which is only part of the story)

?? And now we're going with 'Web3' as the collective term for digital transformation using decentralised technologies

Or at least, that's how I like to describe it.

?? The folks at?Global Blockchain Business Council (GBBC)?have put together a helpful infographic here that may help:

It's almost impossible to explain this space by talking only about how the technology works. And without relatable case studies, it's hard to capture the imagination of the masses. And then without clear commercial drivers, it's hard to justify to people (founders, enterprises, governments, etc.) why they should invest their time and money in building with Web3 tech.

I'm not saying this is the best overview of Web3 that we've seen so far, but it prompted some solid discussion and sharing of other examples, here.

??? Who's Who in the Web3 Oasis

This week saw the launch of a bumper report (288 pages!) from Crypto Oasis that covers almost every stakeholder, organisation and technology in Web3, albeit through the lens of the UAE, one of the most progressive countries when it comes to welcoming Web3 projects.

It's a big read, but well worth it, if you're looking to improve your understanding of the different corners of the decentralised work, including:

  • Layer 1 & 2 protocols
  • Decentralised Autonomous Organisations (DAOs)
  • Government incentives & free zones
  • Tokenisation platforms
  • Crypto exchanges
  • NFT platforms
  • The Metaverse
  • DeFi
  • Web3 gaming
  • Legal & compliance
  • Venture capital?
  • Incubators & venture builders

Shout to?Ralf,?Saqr?and?Faisal?(and their army of content creators, including INACTA ) for pulling this one together.

?? Sotheby's Launches NFT Marketplace, Minus the Privacy?

Sotheby's?launched its own NFT marketplace, but why? And is there a fatal flaw in their approach?…

Since April 2021, Sotheby’s has made over $120 million in total NFT sales!

It’s great to see a traditional art house recognising digital assets (or non-fungible tokens on a Blockchain) as ‘art’. It’s an important bridge between the old and new world. It can add a layer of branded trust to a deliberately trustless industry. Which may, ultimately, be necessary.

It’s important to assess the benefits for adding a new ‘intermediary’ in this emerging space. Sotheby’s can bring new customers to NFTs, can provide a ‘real world’ presence which we have seen through in-person NFT events…

BUT, here’s the disconnect for me…

No alt text provided for this image

In the ‘old world’ Sotheby’s were famous for enabling anonymous bidders to buy rare art without being physically present. A P2P marketplace on Blockchain provides ‘pseudonymous’ access (you can see the wallet address) but with a small amount of on-chain analytics you can learn a lot about that person’s Web3 history and holdings. And potentially open up whales to targeted hacks or worse… I would expect Sotheby’s to have considered this fundamental need of its OG customers when going into Web3. Maybe they have… But if they haven’t… ??

We need to start baking privacy AND trust into the apps that we build in Web3, otherwise we won’t see the customer adoption we are all expecting. Read more on this article here, and there's more on privacy below.

???? How Much Do You REALLY Care About Privacy?

It's an important Friday Poll this week: Should we care more about what people can learn about us from our data?…

It’s well known now that if the app is for free, you are the product. And many Web2 companies make their money from collating and selling data about their users.

Blockchain can be a game changer, but even pseudonymous wallet addresses can be tracked and analysed. And from there, it may be possible to browse your entire Web3 history as well as your connections and counterparties. We have technology that addresses this problem, but it’s not being widely used. YET.

Looks like only half of the LinkedIn Web3 community are regularly using data protection and privacy tech. And even then, it may not be enough. Listen to why in this week's LinkedIn Live with Harry Halpin below.

Worth reading the comments and discussion on this topic here.

????♀? The Importance of Privacy on the Blockchain Won't Save the World Podcast

Harry Halpin and Nym have been working for years on 'mixnets', a privacy technology that pre-dates Bitcoin, and can support Web2 and Web3 infrastructure. Harry has worked with Sir Tim Berners-Lee, and at the 美国麻省理工学院 , so he knows a thing or two.

We start with why VPNs don't solve the problem, who the 'bad actors' are within the world of Web2, and what everyone can do to increase their agency and competence when it comes to privacy and data protection.

User data protection should be something everyone should take very seriously Alot of people make a fortune from crypto then lost them due to lack of proper protection of their asset

Anthony Day .. pretty good diagram on web 1 to web 3. Thanks for sharing. It seems to me, however, that all the descriptions of Web3 start from "what's wrong with Web 2"? by definition, that means we are looking at Web3 from a warped perspective of Web2? Who has done the best job of defining Web3 from "nirvana backwards"? What is the ultimate Web3 user experience?
