8 Ways to Get Involved with SDG8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth)

Did you know the United Nations has set 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved by 2030? This ambitious "world's to-do list" aims to create a better world and a better life for everyone.

These goals address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, quality education and decent work.

SDG 8 aims to promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all. Achieving this goal requires collective action from individuals, organizations, and governments. So, you have a role to play.

As your British Council Ambassador for SDG8, here are 8 ways YOU can also engage with SDG 8:

1. Promote Youth Employment

·?????? Help somebody unemployed by providing career guidance, taking the time to review their CV or cover letter, or giving them feedback to up their LinkedIn game.

  • Mentorship Programs: Participate in mentorship programs to guide young people in their career paths. Or simply respond when you receive a message on LinkedIn from somebody seeking career advice (remember you were there once too).

·?????? If you are ever in the position of a recruiter do not be afraid to give a chance to non-traditional hires such as people with unique career backgrounds. These people will often surprise you with their creativity and persistence.

·?????? Mention others in rooms full of opportunities. Trust that when it’s your time others will do the same for you.

2. Advocate for Fair Labor Practices

  • Support Ethical Brands: Choose to buy from companies that adhere to fair labor practices and provide decent working conditions. Websites such as https://goodonyou.eco/ help you choose ethical brands.
  • Raise Awareness: Use social media platforms to highlight issues related to unfair labor practices such as child labor and advocate for change.

·?????? Pay your employees fairly. This includes interns, casual laborers, contractors, consultants, service providers and everyone that works for you.

3. Support Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)

  • Buy Local: Support local businesses and entrepreneurs by purchasing their products and services. Remember when you buy local your money will go further in helping create and keep jobs.

4. Enhance Skills and Education

  • Lifelong Learning: Share free courses with youth in your network to encourage continuous learning and skill development for staying relevant in the job market.

5. Advocate for Policy Changes

  • Lobby for Minimum Wage Laws: Advocate for the implementation and enforcement of minimum wage laws to ensure fair compensation for all workers.
  • Support Labor Rights: Promote policies that protect workers' rights, including safe working conditions and reasonable working hours.
  • Internships and Apprenticeships: Encourage businesses to offer paid internships and apprenticeships that provide valuable work experience.

?

6. Promote Balance and Inclusion

  • Work-Life Balance: Support policies that promote work-life balance, such as parental leave, remote work, and flexible working hours.

7. Encourage Sustainable Jobs

  • Green Jobs: Promote the creation of green jobs that contribute to environmental sustainability. As defined by the International Labor Organization (ILO), green jobs are?decent jobs that contribute to preserve or restore the environment for example jobs in renewable energy.
  • Blue Jobs:? Advocate for blue jobs such as coastal tourism and marine biology. According to The World Bank, the blue economy is the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and jobs while preserving the health of ocean ecosystems.

8. Volunteer and Participate in Community Development

  • Community Projects: Get involved in community projects that aim to improve local economies and create job opportunities. Note: I am writing this article as a volunteer with the British Council, and it is so gratifying.

By taking these actions, you will be going the extra mile to be an SDG8 Ambassador too!
