8 Tips to be an Organised Hotel Worker?

Hotels need workers who can stay organised and focus on the work and projects in hand – but we are not all born with these Organisational Skills. Today we will begin looking at General Organisational Skills...
Give yourself time and space. Getting organised doesn’t happen by chance. You need to give yourself time to do it. Take a bit of time each day to think about what you’ve got to do that day, and plan when you’re going to do it. It’s best to do this either at the beginning of the day, or at the end of the day for the next one.
Be clear about what you need to do If like most people, you struggle to remember just what you’ve agreed to do or what you need to do during your shift (if you had enough time), then keep a list. If one list is not enough, then keep several. I have three lists for today.
Decide when you’re going to do tasks Use a Diary. If you are struggling to get yourself organized, buy yourself a diary and schedule your life into your diary. If you prefer, use an electronic calendar, but make sure you keep it safe and secure. Write clearly what needs to happen into time slots. Don’t use lots of scribbles and abbreviations.
Decide what is important and what is urgent. It is a delicate distinction, but everything can be separated into either urgent or not, and important or not. Only one thing I am doing today is important (this advice that I am writing) – nothing is urgent. Some things are both important and urgent. Others are neither.
If you need to Break down tasks. Break large tasks down into their component parts. Do you really need to do the whole task straight away? Whilst there is no point in rushing a task that there is no rush for, having loads of tasks hanging around leads to dis-organisation.
If you can Delegate parts of the task. We cannot all delegate, but if we can, do you really need to do all of a task? However, remember, it can sometimes take as much time to delegate as to do the task yourself, especially if it’s relatively quick to do, but could take a while to explain.
Never get frustrated by extra tasks. We all know how it feels in Hotels. You’ve just spent 10 minutes organising yourself, and you find an email from your Manager telling you to drop everything and come and find them. Don’t get cross or frustrated. It will not help.
Stay on top of things. Especially when you’re operationally very busy in the Hotel; it’s easy to let your daily organising session slip. You just want to go home, or you really need to get on with something else. Go and sit in the canteen, or a quiet corner of a meeting room, to avoid anyone talking to you, or the temptation to leave. You must, it’s very important to keep on top of your scheduling and organising, as otherwise everything gets in a real mess, and then it takes hours to untangle.
