8 Tips On How To Overcome Your Fears Of Starting A Podcast

You are an experienced coach, consultant or course creator, but that doesn’t mean that starting a podcast isn’t scary for you.?

Because whether you are a seasoned business person or a complete novice, you will have probably experienced fear, self doubt and a little imposter syndrome at some point.??

Sometimes that is a good thing. It makes you have ‘one more look’ at the map, or that proposal you are sending out. It can keep you safe.? It can help you do better work.?

But sometimes fear can get in the way. It can keep you rooted to the ground like a deer in the headlights. Stopping you from making progress, even leading to negative consequences.?

So how do we overcome that fear, and get your podcast launched? In this article I want to explore the common challenges faced by aspiring podcasters and practical strategies to overcome them.???

Understanding The Fear Factor

Fear is a natural human emotion that has evolved to protect us from danger. It is a complex response triggered by perceived threats or uncertainties, whether they are physical, emotional, or social. When faced with a potential threat, our bodies activate a cascade of physiological changes, including increased heart rate, blood pressure, and adrenaline levels. This "fight-or-flight" response prepares us to either confront the danger or escape from it.

The way that each person experiences fear is unique to them, and varies in severity. When starting a new endeavor which has an uncertain outcome,? fear often shows up as self-doubt, anxiety, and procrastination.?

You can see how this would work against someone who is thinking about launching a podcast. In this case these fears can be particularly potent, hindering one from taking the leap and pursuing ones creative aspirations.?

It's essential to recognize that these fears are normal and that many successful podcasters have faced similar challenges. ?

Overcoming Self-Doubt And Imposter Syndrome

One of the most significant challenges faced by aspiring podcasters is overcoming self-doubt and imposter syndrome. These internal barriers can hinder individuals from taking the leap and pursuing their creative aspirations. It's essential to recognize that feeling like an imposter is a common experience, and that there are steps you can take to conquer the feeling.?

1. Embracing Vulnerability

Acknowledging and embracing vulnerability can be a powerful tool in overcoming self-doubt. Sharing your personal experiences, challenges, and triumphs with your audience can create a genuine connection and foster a sense of community. By being open and honest about your journey, you can inspire others and build trust with your listeners.

2. Focusing On Your Unique Perspective

Every podcaster has a unique voice and perspective to offer. Instead of striving to be like others, embrace your individuality and let it shine through in your content. Your authenticity will resonate with your audience and help you stand out in a crowded podcasting landscape.

3. Seeking Support And Mentorship

Connecting with other podcasters, joining online communities, or seeking guidance from experienced coaches can provide invaluable support, encouragement and insight. Sharing your experiences with others who have faced similar challenges can help you feel less alone and gain valuable insights.

4. Practicing Self-Compassion

Treating yourself with kindness and understanding is crucial in overcoming self-doubt. Avoid criticising yourself and focus on your progress, rather than dwelling on your perceived shortcomings. Remember, everyone makes mistakes, and it's important to learn from them and move forward.

5. Creating Engaging Content

Crafting compelling content is not only essential for attracting and retaining listeners but also serves as a powerful tool for overcoming fear and self-doubt. When you create content that you are genuinely passionate about (and that resonates with your audience), it boosts your confidence and belief in your abilities. As you see the positive impact of your work, and receive feedback from your listeners, your self-doubt diminishes and is replaced by a sense of accomplishment and pride.

Additionally, producing engaging content can help you break free from the cycle of self-criticism. When you focus on creating valuable and enjoyable content, your attention moves away from negative thoughts and self-doubt onto the work and the outcome. The act of creation itself can be therapeutic, allowing you to express your ideas and find meaning in your work. As you develop your skills and experience, doubt becomes belief.

6. Know Your Audience

Knowing your audience is a fundamental step in overcoming fear and self-doubt in podcasting. When you have a clear understanding of who you are speaking to, you can tailor your content to their specific needs, interests, and preferences. This not only increases the likelihood of your podcast resonating with your audience but also boosts your confidence in your ability to connect with them on a meaningful level.

By identifying your target audience, you can focus on creating content that is relevant, valuable, and engaging. This reduces the risk of feeling like you are speaking into a void and helps you avoid self-doubt about the worthiness of your podcast. When you know that your content is resonating with your audience, it reinforces your belief in your abilities and empowers you to overcome any fears or insecurities.

7. Have A Podcast Strategy

A well-structured content plan serves as a roadmap, guiding you through the podcasting process and providing a sense of direction and purpose. When you have a clear outline of your podcast episodes, you reduce the uncertainty and anxiety that can often accompany the creative process. A content plan helps you stay organized, focused, and motivated, which can significantly boost your confidence and reduce self-doubt.

By developing a content plan, you can break down the podcasting process into manageable steps, making it less overwhelming and more achievable. This can help you overcome the fear of failure and procrastination, allowing you to focus on creating high-quality content that resonates with your audience. A content plan also provides a framework for measuring your progress and celebrating your achievements, which can further boost your confidence and motivation.

8. Technical Considerations

The ‘alien’ nature of the technology involved in podcasting can be a big stumbling block for many people. Terms like ‘RSS feed, podcasting, hosting’ and then there is the hardware needed. Microphones, cables, soundproofing.? It can feel overwhelming.?

When you have a solid understanding of the equipment, software, and processes involved, you will feel more prepared and confident in your abilities. This reduces the risk of technical difficulties preventing you from taking action.?

By spending time understanding the basics; editing techniques, audio setup, equipment and terms, you can ensure that your podcast is produced to a high standard - even if you're not the one doing the producing.?

This improves the listening experience for your audience and also boosts your confidence in your work. When you know that your podcast sounds professional and polished, it's easier to believe in its value and potential.

Boy Scout Motto

Be prepared.?

If you arm yourself with knowledge and a plan, you can do anything.?

You prepare for a holiday by packing, researching places to go and things to do, booking the accommodation, getting your visa.? So many elements, but millions of us go on holiday every year.?

Podcasting isn’t any different.

All the points detailed above are simply ways to prepare and plan for your podcasting adventure. Remember, every successful podcaster started as a beginner, so don't let fear hold you back from sharing your voice with the world.

And I’ll end with this quote from Glennon Doyle...
