8 Steps to Success

8 Steps to Success

A few years ago, while I was working at a startup sales/marketing company, I learned about the following eight steps that will help anyone become more successful. Although I am no longer in their organization, I have applied these steps in everything that I have been a part of, and not just work-related. I can honestly say because of these steps I stand out and hit my goals faster than expected, especially in a sales environment.

Step 1. Have a positive attitude

Going into any new sales job it is essential to be optimistic. Nothing good comes from a negative attitude. Cancel out any negative thoughts with positive ones. Life is tricky and no one knows for certain the final outcome, but you will learn and grow from every situation.

Step 2. Be on time

If you’re on time you're late. Strive to always be a few minutes early. When you're late you are rushing, both mentally and physically, and your competition is getting more sales time than you are.

Step 3. Be Prepared

Have everything you need for the day. Since most people are forgetful it looks great that you always have everything you need. Plan your day, your week, and your year. Have a calendar and update it daily, it will help you stay organized.

Step 4. Work your full day

Don’t cheat yourself. Work your full day. If you need a break to re-center yourself, do it, that’s a part of doing great work. When it is time to work, grind. Knock off as much as you can from your to-do list. Finish the day knowing you conquered it.

Step 5. Manage your territory correctly

Wherever you are, you can add value and learn from it. Always look for networking opportunities. Use all your resources. Don't leave any stone unturned. Remember there are no bum territories, there are only bums in the territory.

Step 6. Maintain a positive attitude

A positive attitude is so important, that it made the list twice. But maintaining a positive attitude is different from having a positive attitude from the start. I could be excited about a project in the beginning but when things don’t start going the way I had planned, that’s when I need to protect my attitude. It is normal to have a plan, start it, and then everything goes wrong. How you react will either help or hurt your personal brand. Your attitude at that moment will determine how successful you will be.

Step 7. Remember why you're here and where you are going

Your why drives you. What you do and how you do it doesn’t matter unless your why is strong. Your why is what wakes you up in the morning, it’s what gets you out of bed, it’s what motivates you to deal with people you don’t necessarily get along with. What is your why? Why do you do what you do? Now remember that and grind for it.

Step 8. Take control

It’s your life, no one else's. Take ownership of everything you can control around you. Your salary, your network, your life. You didn’t choose to be born, but you have the choice to live.

I hope these steps work for you, as they been working for me through entrepreneurship, startups, and Corporate America. If you like these steps, please share this article with three of your connections, and feel free to start a discussion below. I would love to hear your thoughts. Until next time, Kyle

I too worked with Cobra and was one of the founding directors in Granton in New Zealand. Having worked in the business for 16 years these 8 steps became part of my being. THEY apply to most parts of life. I have applied these to my entire working career. These steps along with my business partner (who I met working with COBRA) started HRV which we grew from 1m in first year, won Delloit Fast 50 with 742% growth over 2 years to 92m in 7th year, then sold and semi retired at 42. Following these basic principles has been a positive life changing experience for me. Many of these most basic principles particularly step 2 and 3 have been severely weakened in todays business environments. Obviously the reason why things seem to take forever to get done.

I worked with Granton in Pittsburgh PA for almost 2 years, opened up my first outside deal in Cary NC and left the business about a year later. But these principals still resonate with me and any success I have in current business dealings, Great training back then!
