Hello everybody, and welcome to this week’s Down Under Digest. It’s been another busy week at 482 Jobs, with our team posting over 370 new sponsored job opportunities in the past week.
We’re also delighted that (at the time of typing) 24,774 of you have subscribed to this newsletter! A huge G’day to all the subscribers who have joined us in the last week.
Of the jobs posted in the past week, opportunities in Australian Healthcare, Trades, and Hospitality roles continue to make up most of the new sponsored job opportunities. ?If you haven’t checked in a while – you can view our most recent sponsored jobs by clicking here: ?https://482jobs.com/browse-jobs/
This week’s newsletter
We tried something a little different this week and sought input from our LinkedIn page followers to understand what occupations or industries people were particularly interested in us covering.
We posted a poll featuring our top four most popular industries: Healthcare, Hospitality, Trades, and Information Technology. Over 1700 people voted (thank you), and Trade occupations came out top with 31% of the votes.
With this in mind, for this week’s newsletter, we’ll focus on the process of securing a sponsored visa in Australia if you work in a trade. This process applies to trades such as electricians, mechanics, plumbers, carpenters, hairdressers etc. We will use a mechanic for our example.
Securing a Sponsored Job in Australia as a Mechanic.
So let’s build on the profile of our Mechanic looking for an Australian spored job opportunity.
Our mechanic is a male in his 30’s and is called Mohammed. Mohammed lives in India and is looking to commence a new life in Australia.
Let’s get into the steps!
- Job search: Mohammed is searching for an employer in Australia who is willing to sponsor him for a 482 visa. He can use job search websites, such as 482jobs.com to search for available occupations in his field.
- Job Application: Mohammed identifies a mechanic role in Perth, Western Australia, and the job description matches his experience and confirms the role offers Australia visa sponsorship. Mohammed submitted his resume, his experience is impressive, so his resume has been shortlisted by the employer. Mohammed is invited for an online interview and is interviewed via zoom or Skype for the role. ?Mohammed is delighted that he has been successful in his interview and has been offered the job.
- Employer nomination: Once Mohammed has secured a job offer, his employer will need to nominate him for a 482 visa. They will need to be an approved sponsor by the Australian government and provide Mohammed with a valid job offer. The nomination application from the employer to the Australian government will include details about the position being offered to Mohammed, the salary, and evidence of the employer's eligibility to sponsor workers. After the nomination application is lodged, the Department of Home Affairs will assess the application and make a decision. If the application is approved, the employer will receive a letter of approval, which they will need to provide to Mohammed to include in his visa application.
- Skill assessment: As a mechanic, Mohammed will need to complete a skills assessment to demonstrate that he has the qualifications, skills, and experience necessary to perform the duties of his nominated occupation. Mohammed will need to include details of his successful skills assessment with his 482 Visa application. On this step, although not mandatory, to expedite the process (and potentially make you a much more attractive candidate for Australian employers), we’d recommend you have your skills assessed before applying for jobs in Australia. Not all occupations need to have their skills assessed. See here: Will you need to have your skills assessed for an Australian Visa?
- English language requirements: Mohammed will also need to meet the English language requirements for his sponsored visa. The minimum requirement is a score of at least 5 in each of the four components of the IELTS test (or equivalent). Just like the skills assessment step, although not mandatory, we recommend that candidates formally assess their English language capabilities before applying for jobs. Doing so will save time and make you a more attractive candidate for Australian employers. Under certain circumstances, this step may not be required. See here: Do you need to take an English Test for a 482 Sponsored Australia Visa?
- Visa application: So, Mohammed now has his employer nomination letter, his skills assessment, and English language test results. He can now apply for a 482 visa online through the Department of Home Affairs website. He will need to provide evidence of his identity, qualifications, and work experience and meet health and character requirements.
- Visa decision: After Mohammed has submitted his visa application, the Department of Home Affairs will assess and decide. If his application is approved, he will be issued a visa and can make arrangements to move to Australia.
- Arriving in Australia: Mohammed can arrange to move to Australia once he has received his visa. He will need to inform the Department of Home Affairs of his address within 14 days of arrival and comply with the visa conditions during his stay in Australia.
The steps for all trade occupations are almost identical, and we really hope the eight steps above, although somewhat simplified, give you a better indication of the process you would need to follow when applying for a trade-related job here in Australia.
