CV writing can be very daunting and at times confusing especially when you are progressing with your career or have inter-disciplinary experience. Here are a few simple tips that can help update your CV despite where you are professionally.
Personal information adds no value to your CV. If anything it can be used to discriminate you. Just have basic information about yourself which is your name and contact information. Depending on where you are at times you can add your address.
Given that we are in the digital age make sure you add a link to relevant social media platforms preferably LinkedIn. For those in the space of media, creative arts or advocacy you could add links to other platforms. Make sure that you add an active link.
2. Make it short and sweet
If you have experience that is less that 10 years make the CV two pages. If you can make it even a page that will be great!
3. Do not make it colorful
It is tempting to make your CV colorful. I used to have colored fonts for my headings and use fancy bulleting now I know it didn't add value. In the recent past recruiters have started using computer software to review CVs and if you don't have a standard format it will appear disorganized.
Highlight the key area and bolden the title, avoid underlining. Use moderate spacing and standard/traditional bullets.

4. Referees
You do not always have to include them and if you do, make sure they are aware. If the recruiter needs the referees they will always ask.
5. Choice of words
Use action words and active language when talking about your work experience. Show more than you tell. For instances you could say, 'I initiated, organized, led, was involved, completed etc.' Use more verbs and reduce on descriptive language.
6. Highlight skills
Ensure that your skills are well articulated and aligned with both your work experience and the position you are applying for. If you list key skills have less than five and they are well articulated in your CV.
7. Experience
All your experience is relevant be it internship, volunteer work or starting a business. Whatever you do add it to your CV because it brings out your personality and skill set.
8. Update
Keep updating your CV every time you get new skills, experience and before applying for a job.
All the best in your job search!
