When I was 21 years old, I wrote my first blog post on the internet.
After writing my first blog post, I thought digital readers would love it. But in reality, my first blog post sucks. Great writing doesn’t by accident. You need to write a lot if you want to master your craft.
Contrary to what other people think, good writing can be learned.
I have written over 100 Thought Leadership Articles on the internet and here are 8 rules for great writing:
1. Read literature.
Literature has different genres.
There are horror fiction, legal thriller, and science fiction. It’s a good practice to read these types of novels in your free time. If you read these novels, you will understand the different writing styles of professional writers.
Most writers started out as readers. As Stephen King once said, “If you want to become a writer, you need to read a lot and write a lot.”
2. Write to one reader.
I learned this writing tip from Kurt Vonnegut.
If you are trying to please everyone, give up on your dreams. Your writing doesn’t need to be for everyone, but it needs to be for someone. The best writers know the power of specificity.
Being specific will help us attract the right readers.
3. Tell your personal stories.
If you want to persuade your target audience, tell stories.
If you want to build credibility in your writing, tell stories.
If you want to make people cry, tell stories.
The best stories come from your personal experience. Sharing your experience will help you find people who share your interests.
4. Write and edit on different days.
I learned this writing tip from Dickie Bush.
Writing is about sharing your ideas. But editing is about sharpening your ideas. The best feedback comes from your fans and editors. If you want to become a successful writer, you need to know how to handle criticism.
You should take a break after a writing session to relax your mind.
5. Solve a different problem in your articles.
Readers don’t care about you, they only care about their problems.

If you want to be loved by your target readers, you need to address and solve their problems in your articles. For example, most people want to earn more money and build a successful career. You can solve their problems by asking different experts on how to build a successful career and make more money.
Digital readers are ruthless.
If you don’t grab their attention in your headline, they will ignore your work.
6. Buy books about marketing, writing, and copywriting.
You will never regret investing in yourself.
The best writers have a library in their home. They love to read fiction and business books. They are friends with writers who have different specializations.
Reading books will help us understand how experts think.
But you should apply what you read if you want to make progress. After all, true learning comes from changing your behavior.
7. Listen to the feedback of your editors to improve your craft.
The best editors know how to turn your weaknesses into strengths.
Editors care about grammar and writing style. They know how to improve your message. Having an editor will help you improve your writing skills.
A good rule: Edit your own work before submitting your draft to an editor.
8. Share your writing on social media to gather data about your writing.
Jeff Goins, Best-Selling Author and Ghostwriter, says “The best artists practice in public.”
Eminem started as out as a battle rapper. Most professional dancers started dancing on the street. And some New York Times Best-Selling Authors started out as a blogger. Like Mark Manson.
Sharing your work in public will help you know the interests of your audience.
You should use social media to leverage your voice if you want to become a successful writer.
