The disparity in gender within the technology industry is an age-old problem. Over my two decades of experience in the field, I've often found myself as either the only female or part of less than 5% of the workforce. According to the World Bank, women constitute less than a third of the world's tech workforce. They hold only 28% of all jobs in computer and mathematical occupations, and even less (15.9%) in engineering and architecture occupations. These global statistics significantly vary across specific countries.
In the rapidly evolving landscape of technology, the need for diversity, particularly gender diversity, has become increasingly evident.
While strides have been made, the representation of women in the tech industry remains disproportionate. Encouraging more women in technology isn't merely a matter of inclusivity; it's a strategic imperative for numerous reasons in the era of digitalization, data, and AI. One might ask, why is this disparity a challenge that must be tackled? I will discuss 8 reasons why we must ensure this gap is further reduced in this article.
Innovating For the Needs and Usability of the other 49.6% of the Global Population
During most product innovation activities, tech experts develop products and solutions based on hypotheses or in response to specific challenges. When such teams have fewer women in tech represented, perspectives and innovations are skewed towards the male gender. Women generally bring unique perspectives, experiences, and problem-solving approaches to the table. We need more women in tech to innovate and ensure more women-inclusive products and solutions. In a field fueled by innovation, diversity in thinking leads to more creative solutions and better products.
Improved Problem-Solving Abilities
Stephen Covey once said, "Strength lies in differences, not in similarities." Studies have shown that diverse teams tend to be more effective at problem-solving. Integrating women into tech teams enhances the groups' ability to tackle complex issues from various angles. As women, we experience life differently from men, contributing our perspectives and unique problem-solving capabilities leads to innovations that benefit users and the world at large.
Enhanced User Experience Design
User Experience (UX) design focuses on creating products, systems, or services that provide meaningful and relevant experiences to users. Women often have a varied perspective and understanding of user needs and preferences, especially for other women. Having more women in tech means more focus on creating women-friendly and user-friendly products and services that cater to diverse audiences.
Fostering Inspiration
Being female and excelling in my roles has inspired other women and men, especially parents, to encourage their daughters to pursue careers in tech. Fewer women in tech stemmed from the initial stereotype that tech was for men. Visible representation of women in tech serves as an inspiration for young girls to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. This can spark interest early on and encourage more girls to pursue tech-related careers.
?Closing the Skills Gap

The gap in tech talent refers to the significant difference between available tech-related jobs and skilled professionals to fill them. The tech industry continually evolves, creating a constant demand for skilled professionals. Encouraging women to enter tech roles helps in filling this skills gap, ensuring a competent workforce for the future.
?AI Development with Ethical Consideration
As AI becomes increasingly prevalent, diverse voices are crucial in ensuring its ethical and unbiased development. Automated solutions powered by AI, if biased against women due to the lack of an inclusive innovation team, will be detrimental. Women's perspectives can help mitigate biases and ensure AI systems are more inclusive and fairer if we actively participate in product and market development processes.
Economic Empowerment and Equality
Empowering women in tech not only benefits the industry but also contributes significantly to economic empowerment and gender equality globally. Reducing economic and income disparities between men and women is possible as more women take on tech careers, especially with the increasing demand for talent.
Increase in Financial Performance of Enterprises
Research consistently shows that diverse teams lead to better financial performance. By promoting gender diversity in tech, companies can drive innovation, improve decision-making, and gain a competitive edge. The ability to widen income from new user segments – specifically women customers – will significantly increase the financial performance and growth of enterprises.
Conclusion
The imperative for more women in tech during the era of digitalization, data, and AI isn't just about fairness; it's a strategic necessity for the tech industry's advancement and success. Embracing diversity isn't merely a moral obligation; it is a pathway to a more innovative, inclusive, and prosperous future for all.
It is time to amplify our efforts and rally together to bring more women into technology. Encouraging their participation isn't just about filling roles; it's about harnessing fresh perspectives, unlocking untapped potential, and shaping solutions that benefit everyone.
To achieve this, let's actively mentor, support, and advocate for women in tech. Let us create inclusive environments, provide educational opportunities, and challenge stereotypes. Together, let us pave the way for a future where every individual, regardless of gender, finds equal footing and opportunity in the world of technology. Let us act now to build a brighter, more equitable tomorrow. The time for change is today. Join us in shaping a future where diversity powers our technological innovations and where everyone has a representation at the table.
