Two years into my freelance writing, I decided to take a detour. I figured that the bet and fastest way to learn copywriting is to get into a copywriting agency. If you are a copywriter and have ever wondered if agency life is for you, as someone who's been there and done that, I can tell you it's an experience worth having. Here's why I think every copywriter should give it a shot at least once in their career:
1. You'll work with all sorts of clients
One of the coolest things about agency work is the variety of clients you get to work with. One day you're writing about tech, the next day it's fashion, and before you know it, you're diving into the world of gourmet pet food. It keeps things interesting, that's for sure.
This diversity isn't just fun – it's a major boost for your skills. You learn to adapt your writing style to different brands and audiences, which is a skill that'll serve you well no matter where your career takes you. Plus, you'll build a diverse portfolio that showcases your versatility as a writer.
Summary Points:
2. Feedback becomes your best friend
Most agencies have dedicated editors, which means you'll get tons of feedback on your work. I know, I know, feedback can be tough to swallow sometimes. But trust me, it's gold for your growth as a writer.
You'll learn to take constructive criticism like a champ and watch your skills improve faster than you thought possible. This constant feedback loop helps you identify your strengths and weaknesses, allowing you to focus on areas where you need improvement.
Be prepared to follow specific brand guidelines and specific writing rules the agency may have.
Summary Notes:
3. You'll try your hand at different types of content
Unless you're hired for a super specific role, chances are you'll get to work on all sorts of content. Blogs, web copy, social media posts, maybe even some video scripts or podcast outlines. It's a great way to figure out what you enjoy most and where your strengths lie.
Who knows, you might discover a hidden talent for writing snappy Instagram captions or compelling email newsletters. This exposure to various content types not only makes you more versatile, but also helps you understand how different formats work together in a comprehensive marketing strategy.
Summary Notes:
4. You'll get access to some pretty cool tools
You see how you can't possibly buy all tools related to content marketing? Well, agencies give you access to them-for FREE. Agencies often invest in premium tools that can make your life as a copywriter so much easier.
SEO tools, research databases, project management software - you name it. It's like being a kid in a candy store, except the candy helps you do your job better.
Take advantage of this and learn as much as you can about these tools. They'll come in handy throughout your career, whether you stay in agency life or go freelance. Plus, familiarity with industry-standard tools can make you more attractive to future employers or clients.
Summary Notes:
5. There are plenty of opportunities to learn
When you get hired by an agency that is serious about its client, they WILL have resources and trainings available. Most agencies are pretty big on professional development. They might offer training sessions, send you to conferences, or give you access to online courses. It's a great way to keep your skills sharp and stay on top of industry trends.
One of the agencies I worked in ave me an introduction to SEO, which rally helped me understand things more. This put me on pedestal to learning more about SEO later and advancing myself that I now use to help m clients with SEO writing.

Plus, it's always fun to geek out with other word nerds who get as excited about Oxford commas as you do. These learning opportunities not only improve your skills but also help you build confidence in your abilities and stay motivated in your career.
Summary Notes:
6. You'll build a killer network
You may already know that networking is important to your carer growth. Some of my professional connections came from getting hired to work in a digital marketing or content marketing agency.
Agency life is all about teamwork. You'll collaborate with designers, marketers, account managers, and other copywriters. It's a great way to build your professional network and make some friends along the way.
Who knows, your cubicle buddy might end up being your future business partner or your in at your dream company. These connections can be invaluable throughout your career, offering support, job opportunities, and insights into different aspects of the industry.
Summary Notes:
7. You might find your niche
One of the things I really loooove bout working in an agency, is the variety of niches you work with, even within a two-week timeframe. With exposure to different industries and types of writing, agency work can help you discover what you're really passionate about.
Maybe you'll fall in love with writing for nonprofits, or discover you have a knack for technical writing.
This kind of self-discovery can be invaluable for shaping your career path. It's much easier to specialize or niche down when you've had a chance to try out different areas and find what really clicks for you.
Summary Notes:
8. It can fast-track your career growth
If you are really good at what you do, in this case copywriting or content strategy, you should definitely try the agency life. Agencies often have a clear career progression path. If you're good at what you do and willing to put in the effort, you could move up the ladder pretty quickly. I started as a copywriter at Coozmoo agency and got promoted to content manager in just five months.
Your mileage may vary, but the opportunities are definitely there. Agencies often prefer to promote from within, so if you prove your worth, you might find yourself taking on more responsibility and climbing the ranks faster than you would in other settings.
Summary Notes:
The Challenge
Now, it's not all sunshine and rainbows. Agency life can be fast-paced and sometimes stressful. You might have to juggle multiple projects or deal with tight deadlines. And if your agency works with international clients, be prepared for some odd working hours.
But here's the thing: even if you decide agency life isn't for you in the long run, the experience you gain is invaluable. You'll come out of it with a diverse portfolio, a bunch of new skills, and a clearer idea of what you want from your copywriting career.
And f you do decide it is for you, the agency lie can be rewarding.
So if you get the chance, give agency life a try. Who knows? You might love it and never look back. Or you might decide freelancing is more your style. Either way, you'll learn a ton and grow as a copywriter. And isn't that what it's all about?
