Taking the plunge into the deep end and starting a freelance writing career can feel daunting.
I've been doing this for nearly two decades and I still experience bouts of 'imposter syndrome.'
But it is possible to have a thriving freelance career even in today's world where many freelancers are concerned about AI coming for their jobs.
With the right mix of skills, discipline, tenacity, and a dash of ingenuity, you can stand out amongst other freelancers and secure high-paying clients.
Here, 8 Key Traits of the World's Most Successful Freelance Writers
Adopt these as part of your freelance success strategy.
1. They're good writers.
First things first: you need to be a good writer. Notice I didn't say great or perfect—because honestly, who starts there? Writing is an art and a craft that improves with practice, feedback, and more practice. It's about finding your voice, understanding your audience, and learning how to communicate ideas clearly and compellingly. So, keep writing, keep learning, and remember, every great writer was once a beginner.
2. They're good marketers.
Here's a little secret: even the most successful freelancers cringe at the thought of self-promotion. But remember the kicker—you bring undeniable value to the table. Marketing yourself isn't about boasting; it's about confidently sharing what you can offer.
Create a compelling freelance writer portfolio, engage on social media, and network like it's your job (because, well, it is). Embrace the discomfort at first, and soon, it'll feel like second nature.
3. They're organized.
If you thought writing was all about creative chaos, think again. Being organized—particularly when juggling multiple clients — is your backstage pass to a smoother show. From managing deadlines and invoices to keeping track of pitches and projects, organization and processes go a long way.
Freelance tools and apps for writers are your allies. The more you can streamline processes, the more time you'll have for client (read: paying) freelance work.
4. They love learning.
One of the most exhilarating aspects of freelance writing is the opportunity to learn something new with every project. If you're a freelancer who plans to be in this career for a long time, you'll need to stay curious and invest in yourself .
There will be times when you're writing topics that aren't fun, entertaining, or sexy. That's okay. Take something away from every assignment.
5. They're time management pros.
If there's one skill to focus on first, start here. The better a freelancer manages their time —particularly the time spent working on client projects—the more money you can earn.
As a freelance writer, you'll often find yourself balancing multiple projects, each with its own set of deadlines and demands. Prioritize tasks, work with clients to realistic deadlines, and put a timer on when you're taking a break to read social media posts and articles like this one.
6. They're an easy hire.
The most successful freelancers are those. who are skilled, yes, but they're also enjoyable to work with. Stand out in a crowded space by being friendly and professional, meeting deadlines, and delivering quality work every. single. time.
The freelancer's job is to take the load off of their client while giving them noteworthy results. Make it easy for your manager to get approval to send more work your way.
7. They're determined.
Freelance writing is not for the faint of heart. It requires a level of discipline and tenacity that can test the limits of even the most hardened souls. There will be days when you really don't feel like writing.
When deadlines are all piled up on the same day. When you have to get client work done even when the kids are sick. When your internet is down.
Freelancers are a resilient breed. (We're also welcoming too. Join the freelance community when you snag your first freelance writing job for beginners. )
8. They've got thick skin.
Last but certainly not least, prepare to don your armor of thick skin. (Or at least pretend like you have it.) Rejection and criticism are part of the game, but they're not reflections of your worth. Learn from feedback, shake off the no's, and keep pushing forward. Your next yes is just around the corner.
