Did you know that almost 5,200 people died from work-related injuries in 2021? That’s quite a significant number than in 2020 when the Covid pandemic kept people from the workplace. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics gives us a lot of data that provides insight into the risks faced by the average US worker at their jobs.
With the emergence of the latest safety precautions and training techniques, workplace injuries have decreased dramatically over the years. However, even today, some professions still remain more dangerous than others.
Here are the eight most dangerous jobs in the US, based on the data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2021 for fatal injuries and 2020 for nonfatal injuries and illnesses:
1. Tree trimmers and pruners
This is the position with the highest rate of work-caused deaths. Considering the number of nonfatal workplace injuries, it ranks at 76th place. If we compare the profession with the typical American job, the fatality rate is 21 times higher.
2. Commercial pilots
Commercial pilots do not include pilots of passenger planes for major airlines. These professionals pilot planes and helicopters to carry cargo, lead air tours and navigate air ambulances. The nonfatal injury rate for the profession is ranked exceptionally low at the 297th position because nearly all deaths on the job were due to catastrophic crashes.
3. Farm and ranch animal workers (including aquaculture)
Those who have the third-highest death rate due to their jobs are the ones who tend to livestock. The fatality rate for the job is 15 times higher than that of the typical American job. We cannot obtain a well-rounded record of injury rates because self-employed workers and those working for farms with less than 11 employees are not required to complete the annual BLS survey.

4. Logging workers
Logging workers earn an average of $46,000 a year, according to federal statistics. These professionals have led the fatality ranking in some years and have dropped to the 4th place now. In 2021, the death rate for the position was 13 times higher than that for the typical American worker. The nonfatal injury rate is at the 191st position.
5. Roofers
Roofers rank at the 108th position for nonfatal workplace injuries and are in fifth place for fatal work injuries. The fatality rate is 10 times higher than that for the typical American job. The leading cause of death and injury is due to falls, which can be prevented using the appropriate safety equipment such as harnesses.
6. First-line supervisors of farming, fishing, and forestry workers
This occupation pays an annual average of $54,000 and involves working with people who operate heavy equipment and dangerous tools. There are often hazardous weather conditions associated with the job alongside large, moving objects and animals. So, there is no wonder that it lists at the 6th highest place regarding the fatal injury rate. The rate of nonfatal illness and injury for the job ranks at the 216th position.
7. Agricultural equipment operators
This profession involves controlling big agricultural equipment for tilling, planting, harvesting, feeding, and herding. The fatal injury rate for the job is the 7th highest in America. This number is five times higher than that of a typical job.
8. Heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers
Most commonly referred to as truck drivers, these professionals drive big rigs weighing more than 26,000 pounds to transport cargo. The fatal injury rate is the 8th highest while the job ranks at 65th position for nonfatal injuries. The most common cause of death on the job is wrecks while falls and overexertion are the most common causes of injury.
