Leading authentically as an underrepresented leader presents unique challenges and opportunities. Here are several key lessons to help navigate this journey:
1. Embrace Your Unique Perspective
Underrepresented leaders deploy unique strategies that can challenge traditional notions of leadership. Use your distinctive experiences and viewpoints as strengths.
As an underrepresented leader, you bring valuable insights that can drive innovation and inclusive practices within your organization. Your unique background allows you to see opportunities and challenges that others might overlook.
2. Develop Contextual Agility
The capacity for "contextual agility" is essential for underrepresented leaders. Adapt your leadership style to different situations and environments.
It is crucial to be able to read the room and adjust your approach accordingly. This flexibility can help you navigate the complex dynamics of diverse work environments.
3. Leverage Vulnerability
Leading with vulnerability is a significant paradigm shift from the leader-as-hero mentality. Use vulnerability as a tool to build trust and authenticity.
While traditional leadership often values stoicism, showing vulnerability can humanize you and strengthen relationships with your team. It’s about finding a balance between being strong and being real.
4. Navigate, Better Yet Reject, Imposter Syndrome
Imposter syndrome in marginalized leaders often stems from exclusive systems, not personal shortcomings. Recognize and address feelings of imposter syndrome.
Understand that these feelings are often a symptom of systemic biases rather than a reflection of your capabilities. Seek support and mentorship to reinforce your self-worth and confidence.
5. Advocate for Yourself
Marginalized leaders need to assertively advocate for their contributions and career advancements to counteract systemic undervaluation. Proactively communicate your achievements and advocate for your career growth.

Don’t assume your hard work will always be noticed. Regularly update your superiors on your successes and express your career aspirations clearly.
6. Build Alliances and Networks
Creating a support network is crucial for navigating and succeeding in environments where you might be underrepresented. Cultivate a strong support network both within and outside your organization.
Building relationships with allies who understand your challenges can provide emotional support, mentorship, and advocacy when needed.
7. Model Authenticity
Authentic leadership involves using your own values and experiences, which can sometimes clash with embedded norms but is crucial for genuine engagement. Lead by example by bringing your full self to work.
Encourage an environment where all employees feel safe to express their authentic selves. This not only benefits you but also fosters a more inclusive and innovative workplace culture.
8. Understand and Use Organizational Power Dynamics
Leadership often involves navigating and sometimes challenging existing power structures to create space for diverse voices. Be aware of your organization's power structures and dynamics and use them to your advantage.
Knowing how decisions are made and who holds influence can help you navigate the system more effectively and position yourself for leadership opportunities.
Access to truly authentic leadership is not the same for everyone yet it is essential if we are to build impactful organizations.

9 个月This is so true!! We constantly have to mold ourselves into the appropriate boxes and none of them are big enough for our full authenticity. I also think the word is used so much that the meaning gets lost.

9 个月Great list Jenny Vazquez-Newsum, Ed.D.. First, what came up for me in your post is the monologue from the Barbie movie!! ?? As I read your list, one of the things that has helped me is aligning with both my values and my childhood dreams. I've lost sight of those a few times and when I reconnect, it gives me strength to step in with courage because I know it comes from my core.
