8 Key Attributes to look out for when choosing an Advisor or a Consultant

In my last post, ‘?4 Counterintuitive Facts on how NOT to choose a Consultant’?I spoke about the traps to lay clear off when choosing a Consultant, specifically for the first time buyers.?

But, of course, choose, you must!

Businesses need new talent and new capabilities, and you have to explore both inside and outside of your boundaries. You have to face the decision of hiring a consultant, sooner or later. The question then is, not?To Hire or Not, but how to go about the screening process.?

Let’s look at some of the pointers to keep in mind that can help you choose the best-fit for you.

1)????Someone who Takes a Genuine Interest in Your Situation?

Do they display an inclination to understand?your?context? Do they encourage you to share your journey and your learnings? If you find them listening to you keenly, replying using your context, you got them right.?

2)????Look for Authenticity?

I would place a huge importance on this one. This may not be readily identifiable; but it is possible to separate the chaff from the grain. Be alert to any lack of congruences in the person's actions and expressed values. Integrity is the keyword you need to look out for.

3)?????Collaboration

Check if the person is prescriptive. Let go of them.??The problems that we all face are quite common, but the solutions need to be uniquely customized to our situation.?

4)????Challenges your thought process?

See if spending time with them energized you and spurred you on to become more reflective, to question your preconceived notions. It is a blessing if you find someone who can encourage you to get over yourself and seek more. Hold on to them

5)????Vulnerable

May not appear to be extremely important to you, but, vulnerability is one big plus point in their arsenal. People who can be vulnerable are secure enough not to damage you in retaliation. They are, of a sound mind, to say the least.?

6)????Domain Knowledge?

While most people would just view this as the single most important attribute, in my experience, it surely is important but not the only one. Look for their credentials, but also assess if??they can also understand about the other functions beyond their specialization. This indicates flexibility and adaptability in your consultant, attributes that will be useful for you.?

7)????Cultural Alignment?

Look at their past work and testimonials. Try and check on the references. But with the aim of??finding out, not just their past successes and achievements, but also their work values and ethics. Ask yourself, if their values align with yours.

8)????Drive Execution & Accountability

Even the best advisors fail if they can’t hold you accountable and follow-through execution. Look for someone who offers such sustainable support.?
