8 Japan Conferences: 2021 in Review, Part 1
Here’s a short recap of where and what we discussed
Conferences are always exciting and filled with thought-provoking ideas and discussions. This was indeed the case in 2021 around Asia-Pacific (APAC). The year was packed with many great opportunities to attend panel discussions and presentations across the region. In addition to being able to communicate past research results and findings through presentations, I was happy to be able to serve in the role of conference chair and panel moderator and have opportunities to engage and discuss with leading industry thinkers and luminaries, paving the path for future research themes and insights, all of which were quite valuable to me. People meet and exchange opinions and ideas, with the result of deeper discussion. To my mind, the preparation and nerves that precede the big day are fundamental to the mission of being an analyst and at the heart of our profession.
Since the pandemic, digital has become the norm in the conference scene. Events sponsored by industry associations, media, and vendors have moved to webinar formats, and Celent's Innovation and Insight (I&I) Week was again conducted in a digital format this year. The digital transformation (DX) of these conferences is accelerating the distribution of on-demand digital content, as well as making huge synchronous and asynchronous human interactions via web screens routine.
As we begin 2022, we look back at the conferences and Celent webinars of 2021. A common thread running through the discussions in the banking, insurance, securities, wealth management, and risk management industries is new competition and collaboration through DX and ecosystem innovation; the advancement of platform business through open architecture and application programming interfaces (APIs); data-driven decision-making through artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML); and legacy platforms and core systems modernization revolutionized by the cloud, cloud innovation to modernize legacy platforms and core systems, and accelerated innovation.
In Part 1, we will look back on four noteworthy conferences from the earlier part of 2021.

FUTURE OF CLOUD IN FINANCIAL SERVICES?|?12/14/2020–1/25/2021
Celent's 2021 webinar kicked off with?a series on the cloud.
The cloud continues to evolve, having a steady and significant impact on financial services. Financial institutions are relying more and more on cloud services and cloud ecosystems to drive innovation and adapt to ever-changing business needs. Risk aversion has slowed the pace of this transition, but the new normal has made the business case clear. How or where should financial institutions begin their transition to the public cloud? The cloud environment is more complex than ever, and misconceptions and prejudices about its risks, how to implement and deploy it, the technology itself, and security remain. In this report, Celent discusses the latest developments specific to each vertical to answer these questions for business leaders taking on the cloud:

RECAP OF MODEL AWARDS PROGRAM 2021 | ACCELERATE!?| 3/9/2021–3/11/2021
In 2021, Celent's Innovation & Insight (I&I) event celebrates its 15th year.
Through the?Model Awards Program, Celent identifies and celebrates the best uses of technology in financial services, including banking, insurance, wealth management, capital markets, and risk and compliance.
Inspired by the innovation demonstrated by the Model Awards Program, the I&I event itself continues to evolve. In 2020, as the multifaceted impact of COVID-19 was rippling across the globe, I&I Day went online. In 2021,?I&I Week 2021?was a three-day virtual summit, March 9–11, featuring live presentations, Model Award-winning project announcements, awardee case study videos, fireside chats, breakout sessions, and more. I&I Week 2021 was a success because of all the people who applied for the awards program, the winners, the event sponsors, the presenters, and everyone who attended the event.
After the event, we continued to release a lot of digital content through the I&I Week platform?hub pages. This webinar series is a summary and commentary of that in Japanese. We featured interviews, replays of live sessions, videos featuring innovative implementations by award winners, and links to case study reports.
