Employee engagement is defined as the overall qualitative and quantitative connection, an employee has with his or her office. It brings in line the wishes and ideas of the employee. In simpler words, employee engagement is the degree to which an employee feels passionate about his or her work and therefore consciously strives to do better than expected.
Advantages
1. Employee Retention:
The economy is improving and the worst seems to be behind us; workers are finally able to stick their heads up and look around. It’s become difficult to retain the top performers and we need to put in an extra effort to retain them. Employees join a company with expectations and desires. And when an employer fails to provide those, they start looking for better options. Therefore, engaging employees helps reduce the cost of turnover and improves retention.
2. Productivity:
An engaged workforce will work harder, faster and with much more enthusiasm. This is because the more engaged an employee is, the better his or her communication, encouragement, positivity and contributions in the workplace. Engaged employees always put in additional efforts into their work. This leads to optimal productivity and also helps in getting the desired results.
3. Improves Customer services
I remember a quote by Richard Branson “Clients do not come first. Employees come first. If you take care of your employees, they will take care of the clients.” We need to improve the engagement level to improve customer service. Engaged employees always place the company interest first making the end customer happy by delivering a superior customer service…
4. Positive Vibes
Indian cricket team breached Fortress Gabba even though, there were many “A” players missing. This is what engagement does and engaged employees bring spirit and energy to the workplace. Their motivation and drive to succeed catches up with others in no time. Such employees are a lot more active and they take up additional tasks and motivate others.
5. Team Spirit:
Memorable experiences both positive and negative that bond team members together. Challenges such as project dead lines and long hours can create a sense of camaraderie in teams. Ashwin scored a century in the 2nd test match at Chennai in Feb 21. Siraj, who was at the other end of the crease, was seen punching in the air and celebrating it like he himself scored a century. This is what team sport is all about and same is true for team bonding or employee engagement.
6. Drives Employee Advocacy
One of the biggest advantages of employee engagement is that the engaged employees become company advocates. They feel a sense of pride to be a part of the organisation and endorse their company products actively. They share their experiences with their friends and relatives as well as on social media, a person is more likely to buy a product or take up a course when their friends talk them about the same. Do you think that now is the perfect time to make employees your advocates given the ever increasing influence of social media?
7. Healthy Home Life
Engaged employees are happier with their work, which means they are less stressed and hence don’t bring office luggage at home. This helps in work life balance as they spend quality time with their family members.
8. Cost Savings
Hiring and training a new employees costs time and money. A study by one of the top consulting firms says “the cost of losing an employee can range from thousands to lakhs of rupees, to 1.5-2x their annual salary.”
When employees leave a company, the cost of hiring and training a new employee is high. Another situation is when an existing employee does his work halfheartedly but still takes the entire salary.
