The 7th General Elections; History and the Numbers

Onakpoberuo Onoriode Victor

There has been 6 general elections since 1999. The North and South have had 3 terms each;

  1. 1999-#South-1 (popular votes; 18,738,15)-#PDP
  2. 2003-#South-2 ( popular votes; 24,456,140)-#PDP
  3. 2007-#North-1 ( popular votes; 24,638,063)-#PDP
  4. 2011-#South-3 (popular votes; 22,495,187)-#PDP
  5. 2015-#North-2 ( popular votes; 15,424,921)-#APC
  6. 2019-#North-3 ( popular votes; 15,191,847)-#APC

If this #historical rhythm were to continue, it should naturally oscillate to the South. Of the 6 elections so far conducted, 3 have had popular votes exceeding 20M. 2 of these elections were won by a Southern candidate and 1 by a Northern candidate. There have also been 3 elections were popular votes were below 20M; 2 were won by a Northern candidate and 1 was won by a Southern candidate. All the elections where popular votes exceeded 20M were won by the PDP. VP Atiku was 3rd in the 2007 elections and 2nd in the 2019 elections. The state by state voting revealed he gave a formidable contest. For the APC to be able to win a formidable aspirant as VP Atiku, PMB will have to step up and actively campaign. If he decides to be neutral, then its game over for APC.

There is a projected upset from a strong and emerging #3rdforce. Whether the social-media outcry for the 3rd force will translate into votes is a possibility many are hoping for.

2023 will see the conduct of the #7thgeneralelections, there may be several positives and surprises to come.

God bless Nigeria
