#78 - Finding The Right Opportunities

The new Jobseeking is Hard is out now! Read it here:

https://www.jobseekingishard.com/p/78-finding-right-opportunities

This week we’re talking about:

  • Stupid interview questions
  • Some good news about taking a chance
  • A jobseeking horror story about an interviewer who was basically 3 red flags in a trenchcoat
  • One way to make your resume stand out in this job market when competition is fierce among SO MANY qualified jobseekers
  • The best (worst?) job posting of the week
  • And a way that companies are fighting back against job scams

And for Premium subscribers I’m:

  • Debunking a post about "talking bad about employers" during interviews and why discussing these issues is vital to your decision-making
  • Giving you some tricks to avoiding toxic hiring managers
  • Telling you some advice on how to answer your desired salary range on applications
  • Answering a Premium subscriber's question about being interested in everything about a job except pay. I'll explain the thought process behind when you should address this with the company and how it relates to your candidacy

Check out Issue #78 today and let me know what you think!

SHAMELESS PLUG

If your job search needs a little more help, Karpiak Consulting offers resume and LinkedIn services, as well as job search strategy coaching.

Who knows…maybe you’ll think our services are pure gold like this person???

How did I help this resume review client? By evaluating their presentation. You can be the most qualified candidate in the world, but you won't get an interview if the recruiter has no idea what's going on with the resume.

Remember, it isn't always the most qualified applicants who get the interview; the applicants who can show they're the most qualified. It's an entirely different skill set. You're utilizing your sales and marketing skills when looking for a job, regardless of industry or title.

It's tough to get an interview if the reader is having trouble navigating your resume and if you aren't providing any specific information.

Do you want your resume to match the job posting's buzzwords? Yes. Not because of AI or an ATS but because the recruiter needs to know you've done the work required in the job posting. But resumes are so much more than keywords and phrases. It isn't just "these are the skills I've used." You also have to show 1) how you used the skills and 2) how successfully you've used them.

By not just providing "content," but also including context and accomplishments, you present a much clearer picture of your background and relevance for the job you're applying for. This not only demonstrates your skills but also showcases your achievements.

In this job market, when competition is fierce among SO MANY qualified jobseekers, one way to stand out is to not just demonstrate value on your resume but have it quickly and easily noticed. Recruiters will only spend so much time on each resume, so make your opportunity count.

Not sure how to quickly and easily demonstrate value on your resume? We can show you how to present it in an easily digestible way :)

Great article Adam. I loved the mix of humor and invaluable advice. The segment on stupid interview questions was particularly relatable—it’s amazing how some of those still make it into interviews today! Also, the tips on making resumes stand out are timely given the fierce job market. This is bound to help someone in my network.

FYI. I am not looking for a job. I have a great role right now in an awesome team in a fantastic company. I love my work. ?? I subscribe to Adam's newsletter for two reasons. One is for me ?? so I can stay aware of job hunting just in case. One is for Adam ?? I want him to be able to continue to share his advice, thus I support him monetarily. This is an investment in me and Adam and others. ??
