This person completely downplayed exactly how awesome they were. Their resume was low-impact, merely stating all of the work they performed at each job.
That’s not what an effective resume does.
There’s a?huge?difference between job descriptions and resumes. Job descriptions are a list of possible skills and responsibilities within the position’s scope. Resumes focus on the skills and duties of the jobs you want to pursue?and how well you performed them.
Job postings are pain points for a company. There is a deficiency that must be rectified. Your purpose as a jobseeker is to demonstrate how you are the solution to that pain point.
The key in this situation was, “I didn’t think I was at that level.” It’s been my experience that one’s personality has a lot to do with this mindset of self-limitation. It’s a form of humbleness, like, “I showed up and did my job. That’s what I’m supposed to do. Nothing extraordinary about that.”
Showing up and doing your job?is?extraordinary. Companies?want?employees who show up and do their job! Don’t let your mindset undersell your value and sabotage your potential.
When reading a job description, ask yourself, “Could I do this job?” If so, make sure that your resume shows it.
