769 Hospitals Are Being Penalized During October 2016 Through September 2017 For Patient Safety Deficiencies: Embedded Data Table Can Be Sorted.

Nationally, hospital-acquired conditions declined by 21 percent between 2010 and 2015, according to the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, or AHRQ   However, hospital harm remains a threat.

The federal government has cut payments to 769 hospitals with high rates of patient injuries. And for the first time CMS is counting the spread of antibiotic-resistant germs in assessing penalties. Those 769 hospitals will lose 1 percent of Medicare payments over the federal fiscal year, which runs from October 2016 through September 2017. Such cuts will undoubtedly cause pain in many institutions.

This December 21, 2016 article from Kaiser Health News provides a useful summary with a listing that can be sorted by name and location for the hospitals being penalized.

In addition, the piece provides beneficial links on related data and topics for those who wish to take a deeper dive.

What if rather than taking the money, the gov't had a mechanism by which the hospitals could earn it back? It takes resources to fix systemic problems and simply removing resources as a punishment seems like double jeopardy. Now with yet another depletion, firms will still have to clear the same performance bar. It seems that a little more creativity could provide a greater social benefit and we all know how well the gov't manages money. It's my perception that the fines collected will simply fall into some black hole account when they could be dangled as an incentive/acclerant for better outcomes. I'm still available to help with process improvement. :) Happy New Year!

While I don't like the idea of govt penalties, the health care industry will be penalized by the private sector as more consumers seek and understand performance. And that's a good thing.
