75% of LinkedIn Members Are Interested in Volunteering – and Other Survey Insights to Inform Your Strategy

Knowing where to invest your time and resources is easier when you have data to guide your strategy. That’s why we’ve launched the Impact Insight , a series of short reports diving into the top challenges facing the global nonprofit community — and how organizations are tackling them — as informed by 2023 LinkedIn for Nonprofits survey data.?

The first edition of the Impact Insight is out now, exploring hiring, volunteerism, and board participation challenges for nonprofits. Read on to discover three key insights, and click here to download the full report .?

Insight #1: Competition for talent is high, but opportunity abounds

More than one in three surveyed global nonprofit professionals (38%) report finding it very competitive to attract talent over other employers. This is an especially big concern in the U.S. and UK right now, where survey participants said this was their biggest hiring challenge.?

While it’s certainly true that nonprofits may find themselves competing with big companies for the same talent, opportunities exist to attract workers eager for a change. For example, a recent LinkedIn Economic Graph report found that the majority of workers displaced from the technology, media, and information industry in the U.S. are transitioning to other industries. A strong employer branding strategy that emphasizes mission and purpose can help nonprofits stand out in a shifting talent marketplace.?

Insight #2: LinkedIn members are looking for volunteer opportunities

Attracting enough skilled and passionate volunteers is a perennial concern for nonprofits, but LinkedIn members are ready to step up to the challenge. Three quarters (75%) of surveyed LinkedIn members say they’re interested in starting to volunteer or volunteering more, compared to just 58% of average internet users.?

Since LinkedIn is a professional platform where members highlight their unique skills, nonprofits can more easily identify and connect with individuals that match their specific needs than they might on other platforms. Pairing a proactive search strategy with a strong LinkedIn presence and impactful storytelling may help to boost volunteer recruitment efforts.?

Insight #3: Interest in board positions outpaces participation

LinkedIn members aren’t just curious about volunteering — 42% of those surveyed say they’re interested in serving on a nonprofit board. But that interest doesn’t automatically translate to participation: only one in five surveyed LinkedIn members (20%) report currently serving on a nonprofit board.?

There may be many factors contributing to this gap, from lack of visibility into open positions to uncertainty around the skills and experience required to effectively serve. Nonprofits can help welcome fresh perspectives to the table by focusing on inclusivity in their descriptions of board positions and encouraging their followers and employees to help spread the word about open roles.

Insight #3 resonates with me. I serve on the Board of a NewYork based non-profit called SPEAKHIRE. We are looking for folks with Marketing/PR/Event planning experience to join our Board. At Speakhire, we offer targeted career mentoring services to children from under-served immigrant communities. The children we support are predominantly from non-english speaking families who have immigrated to the US from countries like Venezuela, Equador, Sudan, Afghanistan and a few other?middle-eastern & African countries. As you can imagine, it can be very difficult for these children to navigate the school system in the US without language fluency and the?social capital that their parents are unable to offer them. This is where we come to help by matching these kids to professionals who volunteer their time based on their ethnicity and career interest.? Whether you are interested to join our Board or volunteer your time to mentor young adults who can get some inspiration from you, feel free to send me a message. #mentoringmatters

Thanks, LinkedIn for Nonprofits, for shedding light on these interesting insights about nonprofit hiring, volunteerism, and board participation trends. As the President of Aktion Wasserbüffel e.V. ?? , a small nonprofit organization based in Germany and Belgium, I would like to immediately take the opportunity to call for volunteers who are passionate about our mission to support poor communities and children in the Philippines. While the competition for nonprofit talent remains high, we know that there are many individuals who are eager to make a difference and contribute to a good cause. So why not join forces with us and become part of our amazing team of volunteers? Don't let the trend of interest in board positions outpacing participation discourage you either. Whether you have skills in fundraising, marketing, or just a willingness to lend a hand, we welcome everyone who is interested in supporting our cause. Let's team up and create a positive impact in the world! #philippines #nonprofit #ehrenamt #makeadifference

Hi, I am interested in seeing if we can help each other in personal + community Not for Profit Environmental + social Protection and Improvement projects - a bit outside the square/New,\ ways, always legal, Honest and Respectful, lots of State and Federal Funding Available for start up funding + Infrastructure in Western Australia +can involve uni students and others with natural abilities. My Idea is to set up non profit organisations + Companies so people can donate time and goods and receive tax deductible receipts and can help some businesses off load excess products that can help our clients, who become financially independent and empowered to manage, control their needs, as Experts in what Their Community needs are. Provide more access to education - work from home jobs, medical and bill paying on line. This is cheaper, better way for all + environment. Less travel time lost, less petrol, gas used. more Solar+ other natural powers used , unwanted but very useable, helpful resources and knowledge+ IT shared, at low costs for all, with little as possible time commitment for everyone. Must become self funding + also allow for Grants and Donations, and growing and spreading methods. Can you help ???
