Malakal Airport Collision Report
A Safe Air Boeing 727-200, registered 5Y-IRE, on a cargo flight from Juba to Malakal, South Sudan, with seven crew, crash-landed on March 31, 2024, colliding with an already crashed MD-82. During the emergency landing attempt, the aircraft landed short of Runway 22, skidding off and hitting the MD-82, resulting in one injury but all occupants safely evacuated. Preliminary reports suggest the Boeing was too low on approach, causing gear collapse and subsequent collision with the MD-82 debris from a February 9 accident. Q&A #3: SARPcheck safety audit, global wet lease, codeshare, ACMI Booster
Question:
Will adopting a Risk-Based Approach reduce the auditing of SARPs?
Answer:
Absolutely no! Removing just a single SARP from any of the SARPcheck audits would mean that not all applicable ICAO SARPs were audited at least once within each 24 months and found in compliance. It is exactly that full compliance assurance which is not only the industry standard for accepting wet lease/ codeshare oversight through a third party audit, but it is even required by some legal frameworks.
So whilst keeping the promise of auditing all applicable SARPs every 24 months, the SARPcheck risk-based element focuses on an identification of areas of potentially higher interest and allocates more audit time for a deeper and more diligent auditing of related SARPs. SARPcheck is risk-based auditing, the compliant way.
In this series I am answering some of the many questions I am asked following the recent release of this new program, which boosts both safety levels and airline businesses by enabling wet leases, codeshares, charters and ACMI. Send me your questions or find more information on www.SARP.org!
