The Telugu film industry, fondly referred to as Tollywood, underwent a significant transformation during the 1970s. This decade marked the emergence of several notable actors, including Shoban Babu, Murali Mohan, Chandra Mohan, Sridevi, Jayasudha, and Vanisri. It was also a period when legendary directors such as Kala Thapasvi Kasinathuni Vishwanath garu, Bapu, and K Raghavendra Rao garu made a significant impact on the industry and its audience.
One of the most significant changes during this period was the shift from mythological and historical films to contemporary, socially relevant themes, and visually striking commercial films. This trend was pioneered by filmmakers such as K. Balachander and Bapu, who explored themes such as love, relationships, and family dynamics, while K. Raghavendra Rao emphasized on songs, dance, sets, and costumes.
The 1970s also marked the rise of a new generation of actor Chiranjeevi, who went on to become the Mega star in Telugu cinema. The period also witnessed the emergence of leading actresses such as Jayasudha, Sridevi, and Radhika.
Additionally, the decade saw an increase in the number of production houses and the adoption of advanced technology in filmmaking. The introduction of the 70mm format, stereo sound, and color films marked a turning point in the history of Telugu cinema.
However, the 1970s also posed its challenges, including censorship issues and a decline in the quality of films due to the proliferation of commercial elements. Nevertheless, the Telugu film industry persevered, expanding its horizons, and laying the foundation for the blockbuster films and talented stars that emerged in the decades that followed.
The 70s were a groundbreaking decade that saw the rise of legendary directors K. Vishwanath garu, K. Raghavendra Rao garu, Bapu, and Singeetham Srinivas Rao garu. K. Raghavendra Rao's Padaharella Vayasu introduced the sensational Sridevi to the world of cinema, while his Driver Ramudu and Vetagadu gave Sr. NTR a complete makeover. Bapu's Muthyala Muggu is a story of pilgrim travelers on a house-boat-like structure, while his "Thoorpu Velley Railu" questions societal norms.

One of the noteworthy moments of the decade was the emergence of women directors, with two pioneers being the legendary Bhanumathi Ramakrishna garu (Antha Mana Manchike) and the poised Vijaya Nirmala garu (Devadasu).
Sr. NTR, ANR, and Superstar Krishna, along with Shoban Babu, contributed to a variety of stories throughout the decade. Superstar Krishna even introduced the Telugu industry to its first cinemascope movie "Alluri Seetharamaraju." This decade encouraged director K. Balachandar to expose societal atrocities with films like Anthuleni Katha, starring Jayapradha in the lead. The 70s also paved the way for character actors like Murali Mohan, Chandra Mohan, and the now Mega Star Chiranjeevi, who began his film career in negative and supporting roles and starred as the lead in Pranam Khareedhu, from where there was no looking back. The decade also saw multi-starrers featuring NTR + ANR, NTR+Krishna, and more.
