I was recently chatting with my client Matt who is on track to blitz $3M in sales this year.
When we started working together he was a "one man band" business, trading time for money, working long days, and frustrated at being stuck and unable to grow his trade services business past $700K for several years in a row. He felt like he'd hit the ceiling and couldn't figure how to break through.
Together we reviewed his situation and set out the pathway for growth. Here's what Matt did to change the game and scale up his business:
(1) We examined his business and identified the current model was a major limiter to growth. At that time, 80% of Matt's day was taken up producing 20% of his income. There were a couple of smaller sidelines to the business capable of producing major leverage, but of course there wasn't time to pursue these. It was necessary to flip his business model and transition away from the labour and time intensive work.
(2) We identified and focussed on a narrow market segment where Matt could position himself as the expert using these smaller but more promising areas of the business. This gave him major leverage and also a higher margin.
(3) Matt had to change his market positioning and pricing model. Instead of chasing business by trying to have the best (cheapest!) pricing, we moved to a strategic and value-based pricing model to reduce price sensitivity and ensure every client and every job would be profitable.
It hasn't been instant, but these changes allowed Matt to break through the ceiling and generate consistent and manageable growth. He now has a significant business, supported by a small team and has the free time and flexibility to enjoy the rewards of his business.
With contracts secured that guarantee sales will exceed $3M+ this year he's thinking about where to focus his extra time to add more value to the business and enjoy life.
Maybe you've experienced a similar transformation in your business. Was your journey similar to Matt's or something entirely different?
Or, maybe you've hit that "ceiling" and haven't yet figured out how to break through?
