After a strike authorization vote went through earlier this month, over 7,000 nurses at major New York City hospitals have officially carried through—a strike at Montefiore in the Bronx and Mount Sinai Hospital in Harlem went into effect Monday evening when the nurses walked off their shifts and went straight into a strike at 7 am.?

The New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) released a press release on January 9th explaining that the strike went into effect after the hospitals and union reps failed to reach an agreement, even after bargaining went on late into the night. The nurses began the strike “for fair contracts that improve patient care,” the NYSNA said.

This is a developing story, stay up to date here.?

I fully support safe nursing ratios. Nurses are frequently undervalued in our healthcare systems, despite the fact that they are essential to providing safe, high-quality care. We can attract and retain the best nurses by creating an environment where they are able to thrive and do their best work.

I'm curious what their current staffing ratios are on a daily basis and how much the average nursing salary is. How does that compare to the rest of the county, taking into account the regional adjustment for wages?
