Unfortunately, as the money supply continues to be inflated your dollar is worth less and less. So, what can you do to start saving your hard-earned money to make it stretch farther? We’ll get to that but first, what are you going to do with your new-found extra money? If you aren’t keeping track of what you spend you won’t even realize you have extra money. That is your first clue, keep track of what you spend or use an envelope type system. This way you have a limit on what you spend in each category.
I would recommend funding whichever one of these categories you need with your new-found savings. What I mean is if number one is applicable to you then use number one, if not then move to number two, etc.
What To Do With Your Money
- Pay off debt – If you are in debt you are waking up every morning more broke than you were when you went to bed thanks to compound interest.
- Save for contingency fund – You need to have a fund available for when inevitably the refrigerator breaks or the car breaks down. The minimum amount I would feel comfortable with is $1,000; personally, I strive for $5,000.
- Save for an upcoming big expense – Do you know you’ll be needing a new car? Put the extra money towards buying that vehicle
- Use it for something fun! – Put it towards a vacation or a day out with the family
Now that we know what you’ll do with your discovered extra money, time to find it!
- Use LED light bulbs – they really are energy efficient and they don’t burn out as often.
- Turn off the lights when you aren’t using them – with several young kids I frequently find our house is capable of landing an airplane because every light in the house is on. During the day we open windows and use a lot of natural light, it’s better for you anyway.
- Don’t use dryer sheets – I don’t use them at all, with a scented soap I find they aren’t needed. If you did want to use dryer sheets you can make your own!
- Hang dry clothes – Especially shirts, it helps preserve the color as well as electricity. I put some of mine through a quick low heat 5-minute cycle. That gives the shirts that soft feeling still.
- Cancel cable – With Netflix and other streaming providers you can find almost anything without that hefty bill.
- Freeze leftovers – You are probably more likely to eat leftovers if you don’t have to eat them multiple days in a row. Food safety says that stored properly most food is good for 6 months in a freezer. Although, I’ve regularly had meals frozen for a year.
- Utilize restaurants and fast food places apps – Chick-fil-a is my favorite! I use that one at least weekly. Typically, the way these apps work is that you scan the app before you pay and earn rewards. You can also complete surveys to get extra rewards. I know Whataburger and Slim Chickens have rewards apps as well.
YOUR ACTION STEP FOR TODAY – Choose one tip and start implementing it today, then I would love for you what other stores have apps for you to collect rewards? Don’t forget to connect with me on social media. I want to hear what you are working on and if this has helped you!
