The Cybersecurity Awareness Program is a campaign to raise public awareness of cyberthreats and equip people with the knowledge and tools they need to stay safer and more secure online. Often, sophisticated social engineering attacks target your personnel. It's time for a comprehensive strategy, led by experts with technical backgrounds, to efficiently handle this issue.
Cybercrime has become an industry. Your network security is more vulnerable than ever because of your users. They must receive training and then exercise vigilance while keeping security in mind.
So, what exactly is going on here?
Trust us, we know how difficult it is to get people interested in your cybersecurity awareness training.
While security program owners appreciate the value of educating the team on security best practices, it’s evident that management, leadership, employees and stakeholders aren’t exactly jumping with delight to start online awareness training .
Yet, there is good news. It might not be as difficult as you think to make the security awareness effort in your company more appealing. All you require is a creative strategy, beginning with these brief pointers:
1. Encourage Humor & Fun
Let's face it: the majority of enterprise cybersecurity awareness training modules tend to be boring. It's understandable that your team dreads logging on to learn as they are all in technical terms and sound like computer science textbooks. It reminds me of that awful college course all over again.
Turning a serious subject into something, dare we say, entertaining is one approach to add interest to otherwise boring lesson plans. Consider some ways you could add comedy into your curriculum, whether that is telling a few security puns or jokes or presenting eye-catching graphics to their desks.
If comedy isn't particularly on-brand, there are other ways to make learning positive, such as acknowledging teams in public for their hard work or celebrating a department's lesson passing with digital gift cards! Consider using virtual streamers in an ecard or a large GIF shoutout on your group messaging app to recognize people who put out the effort.
2. Try Experiential Learning & Gamification
Rather than seeing or hearing, many of us learn best by doing. It is the main tenet of experiential learning, in which you design actual encounters to instruct.
It is more difficult to get your team to cooperate in a physical space to play a game using COVID-19 and the expansion of remote operations. Fortunately, cybersecurity awareness campaigns are adapting to the times by using fun online gaming interactions to convey the idea of "play."
The best example of a digital experience that promotes collaboration is a cyber escape room. By using them, everyone of your departments may learn about security together. But that's only one thought. Ten more fun games are listed below.
3. Use Stories & Analogies
While many of these games have clear narratives, experiential learning is successful in part because of this. Security professionals create a more detailed picture of a real-world cyberthreat than a simple news piece, engrossing students with a play-by-play narrative.
These tales, whether made up or actual, detail a breach's development in a way that encourages thorough comprehension. You'll understand what we mean after listening to a few cybersecurity educators describe actual attacks. Consider how these stories use the tenets of a short story plot: a clear exposition, a build-up to the climax, and a detailed resolution.
Turning technical ideas into relatable examples can be helpful on occasion. Your team might not be familiar with the term "social engineering," but if you used the example of The Trojan War and linked it to troops preparing an ambush, you could be able to communicate the idea of human manipulation in an original way.
4. Use Micro & Nano-learning Platforms
Your teams cannot dedicate whole days to learning about cybersecurity because they have their own tasks to complete. Because students think the lesson plans will take hours to finish, they are frequently intimidated by the idea of completing cybersecurity awareness training courses. Simply put, they are unable to dedicate a free half-day throughout the workweek to these sessions.
By using bite-sized lesson ideas, allay their fears. Tell your team that it's much less of a commitment than they might think it is to finish one module in just 30 minutes.
Owners of security awareness programs can even use innovative training tools like our Campaign in a Box, which sends out motivational emails, brief instant message reminders, and other material drips to keep learners' mindsets in check on a micro level.
5. Repeat Your Message Frequently
Sharing bite-sized instructional materials keeps your company's security top-of-mind, speaking of tiny reminders. To prevent overburden, be sure to keep your reminders succinct and appropriate in rhythm. For some innovative approaches, consider the idea of "nudging," or subtly encouraging your employees to be more security conscious.
There's a big caveat here, though. Don't push your staff to worry about security or force them to finish training if they've fallen behind. Nobody likes to feel bad!
Provide encouragement and empowerment frequently instead! Repetition of positive reinforcement for your team instead of negative criticism and fear creates positivity around your program.
6. Make it Personal & Relevant
If your workforce doesn't feel personally invested in cyber security, no amount of talking about your company's security will be worth the air you exhale.
Every division of your company has its own problems and worries, therefore while discussing security, you must adjust your message properly.
By understanding what each team cares about, you may gain the support of executive management, leadership, employees, and stakeholders.

7. Assess Your Tech & Processes
What level of simplicity do you provide for your personnel to maintain your cybersecurity initiative? For instance, even though you could have implemented a new password management system, did your staff members get the necessary training and feel comfortable using it? If not, someone might secretly retain a password document on their drive, which would be a hacker's dream to find!
Make sure the processes, technology, and tools you've implemented to empower your staff aren't burdensome or unwelcome. Those who don't understand or enjoy a particular security measure may be tempted to skip it since it is an inconvenience, which will make your defenses less secure.
Why should I be concerned?

Build a Culture of Security
Any way you cut it, a company's cybersecurity awareness training program is only as effective as its security-conscious culture.
Even the best training materials will be ignored if your teams dislike the way leadership forces security initiatives onto them, including guilt-tripping, making them feel foolish, considering them as your worst weakness, penalizing them for errors, etc.
Starting with a more sympathetic, humane approach will help to create a positive security culture. Although this shift will take some time, you can give yourself a head start by implementing a training program and providing your employees with the tools they need to advocate for your security.
