7 ways to create a collaborative Classroom

It's time to rethink the traditional classroom. The best classrooms are those in which students collaborate and learn from each other, as well as their teacher. Collaborative learning can be accomplished by using a variety of methods including FOSS (free and open source software), wikis, blogs, social media tools such as Google Classroom or Facebook, video conferencing and virtual worlds. These collaborative approaches help ensure that all learners have an equal opportunity to engage with content at their own pace while also providing them with new ways of interacting with others across geographical boundaries. Here are 7 strategies for creating a collaborative classroom:

1. Schedule a meeting with the entire class to discuss what their learning goals are

One of the most important aspects of being an educator is making sure your students know what they are learning and why. One way to do this is by simply asking them. Schedule a meeting with the entire class, or even just one student in particular, and ask them "What does success look like for you?" This will help you understand their perspectives on how to reach that goal. A positive, open environment is crucial in helping your students to be comfortable enough to share their thoughts and concerns. Another helpful technique in creating an open and comfortable classroom environment is to ask students about their favorite parts of the subject and how they would apply in real life .

Teacher discussing with a student in an online mode

When I? start the year off by asking students what they think of when they hear "physics." I have had many answers ranging from awesome, hard, fun, confusing, mathematics, challenging (all true), etc. The responses provide a very clear insight into how the whole class thinks of the subject. After getting a general view of the classroom, I start to check in with students throughout the year about how their thinking has changed since that first day of class. When I ask why math is so hard for them they tend to say it is because they do not know what to do or how to do it. Hence scheduling a meeting offline or online (Google Hangouts, MS Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, etc.) to get a better sense of how they are thinking about the class, gives the teacher a better understanding in how to reorient the teaching style and incorporate more strategies that will facilitate learning.

In other words, it is less important to have a certain mastery of the content (which can only come with time) and more about having an understanding of how students think about what they do not yet know from their past experiences. In other words, I want to know "how" they are thinking so I can be prepared to help them recognize patterns, connect concepts and ideas in the way they need to make sense of what they are being asked to do. This is a major pedagogical difference between knowing how something works or functions versus knowing why things happen or what causes certain behaviors, reactions, or results.

2. Set up a classroom bulletin board where students can post and share their work.

Students are often excited about their own creativity and accomplishments. At the same time, they can feel a sense of shame when it comes to expressing themselves in front of others. This is because many students have not been encouraged or even allowed to express themselves openly before. The classroom bulletin board will be a place where students can post and share their work in an open space that encourages expression. Students will benefit from seeing other's work as well as having opportunities to collaborate on projects together. The class bulletin board offers teachers another way for students to develop skills such as organization, self-expression, presentation skills, collaboration, and much more!?

Do you want to encourage students to participate in bulletin boards? Here are 4 ways for educators, school leaders, principals, and academic heads to do it:?

  • Focus on the Purpose of Bulletin Boards.
  • Make Sure Students Know How to Post Something.
  • Encourage a Variety of Student Participation.
  • Reward Students Who Participate with Rewards or Recognition.

A quick, easy, and cheap way to create a sense of classroom community is by setting up a bulletin board in which students can post and share their work. At the beginning of each semester, I display blank index cards on my bulletin board, alongside clear containers with labels such as "Writing," "Science," "Art," "Music" and ideas for other categories, such as "The Great Outdoors," "Fun and Games," or "Travel." My students are encouraged to pick one of the cards and post a piece of their best work on it that represents that category. Every few months I rearrange the index cards into new categories and add more blank ones. Before the end of the semester, it's a wonderful collection full of great examples that students can refer to as they work.

Educators are always looking for ways to engage students in learning, and bulletin boards can be a great way to do that. Bulletin boards give teachers an opportunity to share announcements with their students, but they also provide kids the chance to show off their creativity by posting something of interest or importance. If you’ve never thought about including bulletin boards as part of your school culture before, we recommend starting small so it doesn’t feel like too much work at first. Try one thing from this article and see how it goes! What is the best tip you have learned?

3. Create an online forum for students to ask questions about assignments or topics they don't understand

Are you a teacher, technology specialist or administrator looking to provide your students with more opportunities for inquiry? One way is through the use of forums. A forum can be defined as an online discussion board where users can post and respond to messages on any topic imaginable. .? A great way to answer student queries is by starting an online discussion board where students will have access to all sorts of information that they might not otherwise find on their own or in class time. Not only does this foster dialogue among learners who may have different perspectives on the same issue, but it also allows teachers or other experts outside of the classroom space to contribute their knowledge as well .

The best ways to create an online forum is to start small. A good way is for teachers to use an online classroom management tool like Google Classroom or Microsoft Teams or myViewboard, which both have a built-in discussion board feature that allows the teacher to create an online forum and moderate it from their own computer.

The time and effort you put into your forum will pay off in the long run. In this day and age, it is so easy to find information on just about anything online without ever leaving one's home or school. However, not all of that information can be trusted as being correct most of the time. That's why a great way to answer student queries is by starting an online discussion board where students will have access to all sorts of information that they might not otherwise find on their own or in class time. Not only does fostering dialogue among learners who may have different perspectives on the same topics help them learn more from each other but it also helps combat fake news which plagues our society today."

4. Bring in guest speakers from different fields of study that will connect your content to real-world applications

Do you find yourself wondering how your students can relate the content of school to their real world? Do they often have trouble understanding why they are learning what they are learning? If so, then I recommend that you start bringing in guest speakers from different fields. This will help connect content to the real world and make it more understandable for them. One great way is through a panel discussion where multiple guests come in and share their experiences with the audience. Not only does this make the information easier to understand but it also shows that there is actually an application for what we learn as educators or students. For example, if your school has a STEM focus, try inviting an engineer who builds bridges on top of designing buildings all across India.

An architect can talk about her designing of a new library at your school or maybe an Indian classical musician could perform for you all while explaining how he uses ragas (melodies) to add meaning behind his compositions and ideas how you can apply the music theory in your everyday life.

What about asking a theoretical mathematician to come to campus and explain how his work directly relates to modern day software such as Windows or even operating systems like Linux, Mac OS X, Android or iPhone's iOS?

In order to help your students make the connection between their class content and real-life applications, you should consider inviting guest speakers from a variety of fields. This will not only give them valuable insight into how concepts apply across disciplines but also show potential career paths for students that might otherwise be hidden if all educators were experts on one topic area. 5. Encourage student collaboration by pairing them up on projects and group discussions?

Students are more likely to collaborate and learn from each other when they work together on projects. Pairing them up on assignments will give them the opportunity to share their skills, talents, and ideas with others. This can help students build new relationships while also learning how to work well in groups. When students work together they will build their confidence and gain new perspectives on things. Encourage your child to share their work with their partner so that they can get feedback for improvement. This will give them a better understanding of what it means to be part of a team, which is crucial for any future career in the workforce. With the rise of globalization, technology, and social media, students are learning to collaborate with other people from all over the world. In order for them to make a difference they need skills that will enable them to work with others on projects and create solutions together. That's why collaboration skill is important because it enables students to learn how to communicate effectively while sharing ideas and resources which fosters their creativity as well as empathy towards others who have different perspectives than theirs.? The importance of collaboration has been documented by many educators including Linda Darling-Hammond who said "The most successful countries for international competitiveness include those where teachers teach more collaborative lessons."? Collaboration is the cornerstone of Industry 4.0 and inculcating this skill early on will inevitably lead to a better understanding to solve real life challenges, finding newer solutions or better solving old ones .?

The best way to encourage collaboration in the classroom is to have a learning environment with less competition and more collaboration. The society we live in today has led us to believe that being competitive is the only way to survive. And it's been ingrained into our culture for so long that it's becoming increasingly harder to change this mindset. It's not necessary for students to always compete but rather they should collaborate to see newer dimensions to resolve older challenges and foster new creative ideas to create better solutions.

Encouraging Collaboration is a simple and effective way to increase achievement for students.Collaborative Learning is good at enhancing engagement and motivation because they create a sense of community in the classroom. Research has found that students are more likely to adopt new ideas when collaborating with peers than if working alone.? University of Vermont Professor, Carole Peterson said "Peer interaction, collaboration and discussion were considered a vital part of education

6. Give out prizes for creative responses to discussion prompts (e.g., best answer, most insightful comment)

When it comes to engaging students in creative and thoughtful discussions, prizes are one of the best tools teachers have. Prize ideas can range from a simple smiley face sticker for an "excellent" response all the way up to a full-blown treasure chest for an amazing answer. The best part is that there are no rules or regulations on what type of prize you can give. It's all about coming up with something that will make them want to read more and do better in class! We'll explore some different types of prizes and how they might work in your classroom.

  • Setting up a reward system with the student's choice of rewards, based on how often they answer questions correctly or complete assignments on time.
  • Giving out prizes such as candy, stickers, pencils or other small gifts for answering questions.
  • Letting students take turns asking and answering questions in order to create an even playing field among all students.
  • Holding contests with names written on paper balls that are put into a container. A student will pick one out and then answer the question that is written on it for a prize

Learning about what motivates your students to do better in class is important when choosing prizes. This can be used for any age or grade, but making sure everyone

Prizes are a great way for teachers to encourage students into creative and thoughtful discussions. 7. Use technology effectively as a teaching tool by incorporating apps, games, videos, etc., into lectures or discussions

Technology is ever-changing. The world has changed so drastically in the last ten years and it shows no signs of slowing down. One thing that hasn't changed? Kids! They're still as curious, creative, energetic, and smart as they've always been. But today's kids are also immersed in tech - from their cell phones to their iPads - which means teachers need to be just as skilled at integrating tech into their lessons for optimal learning outcomes. We want our students to not only know how to use technology but how to make good use of it too! How can I encourage kids to use tech in my class? We've got your back!

While our resources can take you step-by-step through the process of integrating tech into your classroom, here are some quick tips to get you started.? How do I integrate tech in my class?

1. Find a Purpose Your first step is to figure out what's the purpose for using Videos/games in the lesson content. The videos should add value to the learning objectives and help the learner to achieve the intended learning outcomes.

2. Know your audience - Young learners can get easily distracted when you ask them to actively engage with the videos / games as compared to typical lessons that don't involve much movement & engagement. Use of videos is widely used in the flipped learning model which allows the Students to get introduced to the content before it's taught in class.? Gamification of lesson content requires a lot of student engagement and it might not be suitable for all the students. Gamification of lesson content engages the students and helps them learn actively . Gamify lessons related to topics that are well-engaging - It is very important to make sure that the games you use are related to the lesson content you teach. If not, it is highly likely that your students would get bored and distracted while playing the game - even if they enjoy gamification in general.

Use of technology in the classroom is important for creating engaging and immersive experiences. The use of authentic learning materials such as video, games or even simulations helps students to learn better than traditional content taught by a teacher.

3. Use relevant videos - Videos need to be carefully selected and aligned with the curriculum. There is a real danger that they could be misused as entertaining material when we intend them to make the learning process more fun for students. Make sure there is no irrelevant information or pop ups on the videos. Take the time to choose an appropriate video. It should be relevant for your students and not too complicated so that they can understand what they are watching and follow along with it easily.

To select the right video for your lesson, myviewboard clips allows you to browse through its library of 2 million videos that have been curated by educators and can be played or shared directly with students.
