7 Ways AI will Change Coaching by 2034: The New Playbook

We’ve been hearing a lot about potential negative impacts that Artificial Intelligence could have on our society in upcoming years, including privacy erosion, bias and discrimination, security risks, loss of human control, and ethical concerns.

In my opinion, the biggest impact of AI will be job displacement. Historically, technology has changed the nature, location, and speed of work and so increased application of AI’s impact on work is foreseeable. There’s been a lot written and discussed on this topic. However, there’s been little written on how it will impact sports jobs---specifically, coaching.

When contemplating how coaches’ roles will change, consider the attributes that robots don’t possess, but humans excel at, such as emotional intelligence, creativity, ethical and moral judgment, contextual understanding, adaptability and flexibility, physical dexterity and mobility, intuition, consciousness and self-awareness, cultural competence, and complex problem solving. All of these skills are what make winning coaches successful.

Nevertheless, AI will impact the roles of coaches in the next 10 years, especially by ridding them of repetitive, tedious tasks and potentially taking over most recruiting duties. AI will serve to augment coaches’ abilities, potentially making them super coaches.

Here, I share my insights on the seven pivotal transformations that will redefine coaching careers by 2034.

1. Strategic Game Mastery

AI's involvement in player recruitment allows coaches to focus more on developing intricate game strategies. The future sees coaches as master strategists, using insights from AI to craft game plans that are more dynamic and responsive to real-time changes on the field.

2. Enhanced Player Development

Coaches will pivot towards a more personalized approach to player development. AI provides tailored data on each player's strengths and weaknesses, enabling coaches to design specific training regimens. This focus ensures that each athlete reaches their peak performance, both physically and mentally.

3. Emphasis on Soft Skills

With AI handling analytical tasks, coaches can dedicate more time to nurturing soft skills like leadership, communication, and team building. These skills are crucial in maintaining high team morale and fostering a positive, collaborative team environment.

4. Data-Driven Decision Making

The ability to interpret and utilize data from AI tools will become a core competency for coaches. This involves making informed decisions based on AI analytics for training adjustments, in-game tactics, and long-term team development.

5. The Role of a Mentor

In the future, coaches will increasingly take on the role of a mentor, focusing on the holistic development of athletes. This includes guiding players in their personal growth, mental health, and life skills, ensuring they are well-rounded individuals both on and off the field.

6. Continuous Professional Development

To keep up with rapidly evolving AI technologies, coaches will need to be lifelong learners. This includes staying updated with the latest in AI advancements and analytics, as well as adapting to new coaching methodologies and tools.

7. Ethical Leadership and AI Integration

Finally, coaches will play a pivotal role in overseeing the ethical integration of AI in sports. This includes addressing concerns related to data privacy, fair play, and ensuring that AI is used to enhance, not overshadow, the human aspect of sports.

As we look towards 2034, it's clear that AI will not replace coaches but rather redefine their roles. The future beckons coaches to blend their unique human insights with AI's analytical prowess, setting the stage for an unprecedented era in sports coaching. This new playbook is not just about adapting to changes; it's about coaches having augmented abilities and more time to focus on athlete’s specific talents, leading to even more exciting games and performances.
