Today, we have an *uncomfortably* exciting episode of the Career Warrior Podcast lined up.
About a month ago, the magnificent Maya Grossman posted on LinkedIn about 7 uncomfortable truths that most people spend their entire lives avoiding. I was so intrigued that I had to sit down and have a conversation with her about it.
In episode 306, we delve into seven uncomfortable truths about careers that most people tend to avoid throughout their professional lives.
Check out that episode here!
If you haven't met her yet, Maya Grossman is a Career Coach, 2x VP of Marketing, and best-selling author with 15 years of experience in the corporate world, working for top companies like Microsoft and Google.
Now, Maya shares her expertise by teaching ambitious professionals how to reach executive roles, make quantum leaps in their careers, and earn high six figures without working harder.
She's been on the podcast before, and now she's back in the studio for an in person discussion.
As always, here are the SparkNotes:
Truth #1: A company is not your family
Maya starts off by sharing a valuable lesson she learned early in her career – that while some companies might foster a familial atmosphere, they are ultimately businesses with profit goals. It's a difficult thing to wrap our heads around sometimes, but it is nevertheless true.
Employees need to recognize that their job is not guaranteed and that they must prioritize their own career growth and development. Building friendships and positive relationships with colleagues is important, but it is essential to remember that work is work, and businesses may make tough decisions for their survival.
Truth #2: Results matter more than titles
Maya highlights that hiring managers value results over job titles. Simply having a fancy title doesn't necessarily mean you are the best candidate for a new role.
Instead, focus on showcasing the results you have achieved in your previous positions. Demonstrating your impact through accomplishments and achievements can be a game-changer when seeking a promotion or a new job.
Truth #3: Working hard has its limits
While working hard is essential early in your career to build skills and reputation, it can only take you so far.
Maya emphasizes that to progress in your career, you need to be strategic and focus on outcomes rather than just output.
You must learn to add value and demonstrate your ability to operate at the next level, not merely work more hours.
Truth #4: The best person doesn't always get the job
Contrary to the notion of a meritocracy, the person with the most qualifications or skills does not always get the job.

Hiring decisions often involve a mix of skills, experience, attitude, and the ability to tell a story about oneself. Sometimes, a less experienced candidate with the right attitude and potential might be chosen over a more qualified but less enthusiastic candidate.
Truth #5: No one owes you a promotion, raise, or opportunity
Maya stresses that individuals must take charge of their careers. Waiting for promotions or raises without actively creating opportunities or proving their worth can lead to stagnation.
By treating their career as their own business, professionals can manage it proactively, create opportunities, and accelerate their growth in their careers.
Truth #6: It's easier to level up using the backdoor
Rather than waiting for the right moment or promotion cycle, Maya suggests that individuals create their own opportunities.
Operating at the next level and adding value that makes a compelling case for promotion can bypass the traditional route of waiting in line. This proactive approach can lead to faster career growth.
Truth #7: Your real competition is with yourself
We've all felt it before. Comparing yourself to others can lead to gross feelings of inadequacy. Instead, Maya advises focusing on your own growth and improvement. Your primary competition should be with your past self, continually striving to be better than you were yesterday.

In conclusion, understanding these uncomfortable truths about careers can help professionals make better decisions, set realistic expectations, and take charge of their own growth.
