The two-component epoxies consist of resin and hardener that are formulated to mix together to offer a wide range of mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. While mix ratios differ, they all offer the ability to cure at ambient temperatures or elevated temperatures for faster cures.
Here are 7 tips from our experts to successfully use these epoxies for best results:
1. Make sure you have all the materials and safety equipment (gloves, safety glasses, weight scale, mixing stick, and the 2 parts of the epoxy).
2. If you do a hand mix (for small quantities) it is best to pour the resin (part A) into the mixing vessel first, weigh it, and then add the hardener.
3. Mix the products with the stir sick (not fold – to minimize the air entrapment) scraping the sides and bottom of the vessel frequently
4. When potting with two-component epoxy air bubbles may rise to the surface and pop. If they don’t pop, a heat gun or hair dryer set on high heat will usually encourage them to open. Vacuum chambers may be used to degas the material if the mixed working life allows time for this process.
5. Once the compounds are mixed and there are no significant air bubbles present, it is important not to introduce or entrap air during application. Techniques to eliminate or minimize air bubbles in the completed assembly include pouring or injecting in stages so that any air is driven out rather than being trapped under components or in other nooks and crannies.
6. All potting compounds shrink when they transition from the liquid to the solid-state. The danger is that shrinkage of the potting compound during curing may damage sensitive components. This can be avoided or minimized by choosing a potting compound that shrinks less or is more flexible and by not accelerating the curing process by heat- the faster the cure the higher the stress.
7. It is important to make a "control evaluation sample" to allow quality control and to assure correct production and cure steps.
