LinkedIn is the social media platform that allows professionals to highlight their skills and experience while also providing a window into their potential personality.. However, with millions of users, you can sometimes feel like a needle in a haystack. So, how do you stand out and get noticed on LinkedIn? Here are some great ways to stand out in a crowd on LinkedIn:
- Optimize your profile: Make sure your profile is complete, professional, and accurately reflects your skills and experience. Your headline, background photo, and headshot are all ways to show off some of your personality. Just remember, this is still a professional network, not a dating app.
- Network consistently: LinkedIn is a social network, so be social! Connect with people you know, reach out to new connections, and participate in LinkedIn groups to expand your network and increase your visibility. This isn’t instagram though, so don’t fixate on likes and number of connections. Focus on building relationships…crazy idea right?
- Publish content: Create and share content relevant to the network you are trying to build. Use this to discuss something you are passionate about…of course if that passion is putting pineapple on a pizza, take that content somewhere else! And remember...keep it professional.
- Engage with others: Put the social in social network. Like and comment on the content others are putting out there. Vote in polls, if you like that sort of thing. The main thing here is to not be a one-sided networker, spread the love!
- Use keywords: LinkedIn's search algorithm is keyword-based, so if you don’t have any content in your experience, you will quickly find you are not as searchable as you might want to be. Much like with a resume, the info here should be relevant and should focus on industry language versus company-specific terms.
- Ask for recommendations: For a lot of potential employers, the proof is in the pudding. While having recommendations won’t necessarily make your profile easier to find, they can potentially highlight some of your strengths as endorsed by others.?
- Be consistent: Regularly updating your profile and publishing content can help you stay top-of-mind with your connections and increase your visibility on the platform. Don’t just be a stage 4 LinkedIn Lurker!
Your LinkedIn is a digital extension of your personal brand. Make sure it is reflected in your profile. Take it seriously, but don't be afraid to have a little bit of fun along the way.
