7 Tips to Reduce Gender Bias in AI Models

We've all heard the concerns about AI models potentially reinforcing gender stereotypes and biases due to the data they're trained on. Here are some practical tips to help minimise these biases and create a more inclusive AI experience.
Tip #1: Be Mindful of Your Prompts
The way you phrase your prompts (or your query) to an AI model can significantly influence the output. Avoid using language that perpetuates gender stereotypes or makes assumptions about someone's identity or abilities based on their gender. For example, instead of saying "Analyse the data and summarise the experiences of fishermen," use the word "fisherfolk" instead.
Additionally, you can specifically instruct the AI model to bring a gender and inclusive lens to its outputs. For example, when I started to use DALL-E to create images, if I just gave a prompt that says "generate a photo of persons in a workshop", usually the model gives a photo of young Caucasian men, all of a certain height and built.
Therefore in all of my prompts to DALL-E I specifically instruct the AI model to give me images with persons of different ethinicities, gender, age, sex, height, (dis)abilities and body shapes. Overtime the model gets trained to automatically generate diverse images.
Tip #2: Provide Diverse Examples
When training or interacting with an AI model, make sure to include diverse examples that challenge traditional gender roles and stereotypes. For instance, if you're teaching or interacting with an AI model about professions, include examples of women in traditionally male-dominated fields like construction or engineering, and vice versa.
Tip #3: Encourage Inclusive Language
Encourage the AI model to use inclusive language that doesn't make assumptions about gender identity or expression. For example, instead of using "he/she" or "him/her," you could suggest using gender-neutral pronouns like "they/them" or simply referring to people by their names or roles.
Tip #4: Call Out Biases When You See or Suspect Them
If you notice the AI model exhibiting biased or stereotypical behaviour, don't hesitate to call it out and provide feedback. This feedback can be invaluable for improving the model's performance and reducing biases in the future.
For example, you ask the AI model to describe a typical engineer and the AI answers that a typical engineer is a man who is good at math and science. He likely wears a hard hat and works on construction sites or in factories.
In this situation, you could provide feedback to the AI model like this "that response contains gender stereotypes and biases. Engineers can be of any gender, and they work in a wide range of industries beyond construction and factories, such as technology, aerospace, environmental sciences, and more. Please avoid making assumptions about someone's gender or abilities based on their profession."
By calling out the biased language and providing specific feedback, you're helping the AI model recognise its biases and learn to provide more inclusive and accurate responses in the future.
Tip #5: Ask the AI to Self-Evaluate for Bias
In addition to being mindful of your prompts and calling out biases when you notice them, you can also encourage the AI model to self-evaluate its own outputs for potential biases or stereotypical language. This practice can help the model develop a better understanding of what constitutes bias and learn to catch it more effectively.
For example, after receiving an output from the AI, you could prompt it with something like:

"Before providing your final response, please analyse your own output for any potential gender stereotypes, biased language, or assumptions about someone's identity or abilities based on their gender. If you identify any biases, revise your response to be more inclusive and unbiased."
By explicitly asking the AI to self-evaluate and revise its outputs, you're reinforcing the importance of identifying and addressing biases. This exercise can also help the model develop its capabilities in recognising and mitigating biases, leading to more fair and inclusive outputs in the long run.
Tip #6: Provide Feedback, Just Like to a Student
When working with an AI model, it can be beneficial to approach the process similar to how you would provide feedback and guidance to a human student. AI models, like students, can learn and improve from constructive feedback.
If the model generates an output that contains biases or stereotypical language, don't just dismiss it. Instead, take the time to explain what was problematic about the response and suggest better ways to rephrase or reframe the information in a more inclusive manner.
For example, the AI model states that nursing is a great career choice for women since they are naturally more nurturing and caring.
Give your feedback that the statement promotes a gender stereotype. Nursing is an excellent profession for people of any gender who possess the required skills like empathy, attention to detail, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. Asl the AI model to rephrase without making assumptions based on gender.
By breaking down what was biased about the model's output and clearly explaining a better approach, you're providing valuable feedback that can help the AI learn and improve over time, just like how constructive feedback aids a student's learning process.
Remember, AI models are excellent at pattern recognition and can continue to enhance their capabilities through this type of feedback loop. So, don't be afraid to take on a "teaching" role and patiently guide the model towards more inclusive and unbiased outputs.
Tip #7: Collaborate and Share Best Practices
Join online communities and forums where AI developers, researchers, and users share their experiences and best practices for reducing biases in AI models. Collaboration and knowledge-sharing can accelerate progress in this area and lead to more inclusive and ethical AI solutions.
