7 Tips to Kill Your Food Cravings

Craving is a biological stimulus that indicates the need for energy, but there are so many factors that act in subtly modulating it. A simple and effective way to avoid overeating is to focus your weight loss diet on healthy, homemade foods.

There are conditions like stress, in which the brain is called to work faster and needs sugar more. Or external stimuli, such as the vision of large quantities and variety of food, as happens on convivial occasions, which give rise to the desire to eat even when there is no need for energy; or, again, habits that dispel the stimulus of hunger and satiety, like skipping lunch.

Many common drugs, such as birth control pills or antihistamines, also increase hunger or appetite related to high-calorie foods.

  1. Avoid cravings on the weekend. The first thing to do on a weight loss program is to maintain a varied and balanced diet every day of the week because this way, your mind will not feel the need to ask you for a prize over the weekend. Try to find mechanisms of gratification outside of food: read a good book, a walk in the open air, a gentle massage or whatever makes you feel pampered and rewarded for the fatigues of the week.
  2. There are several tricks you can use to fight nervous hunger at work: the first defense is to always have healthy, low-calorie snacks, such as fruit, yogurt, raw vegetables or a small amount of dried fruit. So when you get assaulted by food, you can satisfy them with something healthy, avoiding falling into high- calorie traps.
  3. Understand your psychology. Try listening to yourself and understanding what makes you throw yourself on food. Perhaps one of the reasons is that you feel lonely and therefore eat to compensate: learn to fill your need for companionship and warmth by calling some friends and organizing social activities.
  4. Avoid midnight cravings. The first thing to do is to structure a balanced diet during the day, which includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks consisting of weight loss food.
  5. Also, it is also very important to reduce temptations. Avoid having high-calorie, delicious foods that do not require preparation to be consumed at home.
  6. Keep calm. Each craving passes in about 10 minutes. If at that juncture you can resist, maybe by going for a walk, focusing on something pleasant, then you can get over it.
  7. Another critical piece of advice may be to avoid supermarket aisles where there are foods that tempt you the most, or to prevent food at home from being visible, so as to reduce hunger.

The most important part is to have a sense of purpose and avoid stressful situations that trigger cravings. It is, after all, a mental habit and with sufficient practice, almost anyone can train themselves to overcome it.
