7 tips for college students attending their first professional conference
Earlier today, a few of our Bay Path University seniors stopped by my office to ask how they can prepare for a conference they will be attending tomorrow. We spent some time going over some tips to help them make the best of their day.
- Check out the conference website ahead of time to identify speakers, attendees, and exhibitors you want to connect with. Research their work and come prepared with questions or topics for discussion.
2. Dress Professionally:
- What does it mean to dress "Business casual"? And how does it differ from "business" or just "casual"? Get a few ideas here: https://www.indeed.com/career-advice/starting-new-job/guide-to-business-casual-attire but most importantly, wear comfortable shoes and make sure to smile as you greet others!
3. Plan Your Schedule:
- What's the plan for the day? Make the most of your time by planning the workshops and activities you want to participate in.
4. Prepare for questions:
- You may end up sitting with a future employer or internship supervisor, so be sure to be prepared to answer simple questions such as: "What are your plans after graduation?" and "What inspired you to major in ______?"

5. Pack what you will need for the day
- I always bring a backpack with chargers, pens, hand sanitizer, a notebook and even water/ snacks. And don't forget your resume and business cards! If you don't have a business card, you can get 1000 printed at Staples for less than $35 and you can pick them up the same day! Going green? Get a free digital card here.
6. Engage on Social Media:
- If you are active on social media, post a few comments about the conference using their hashtag. This will allow you to connect with other attendees and stay updated on conference activities! Share photos, quotes and anything else you find interesting during the day!
7. Follow Up the following day:
- As you meet your new contacts, tell them you will be following up with them the next day on LinkedIn! When you send the request to connect on LinkedIn, be sure to include a note that indicates how you met them. This is how to begin to build your social capital.
Attending a professional conference may cause a case of nerves for some people, but it can also amplify your reach to contacts you would not have met otherwise. Claim your seat! And have fun.
