The last thing you want is to hire someone who's just going to write nonsense and drivel.  After reading these tips, you'll at the very least have a good starting point to assist you.

A Facebook group of successful copywriters, recently weighed in on the topic, and here is a list of things many of them seemed to agree about:

  1. Subject expertise.  Look for someone who specializes in your niche, and has an approach that matches your expectations. There are different methods of copy.  Ask the writer provide you with a samples.  Make sure the writing style matches the tone you wish to convey with your content.
  2. Passion about the subject.  Go for people who have a legitimate interest in your business.  The enthusiasm should benefit you with copy that produces solid end results.
  3. Embodies the 80/20 rule of copywriting. Good copywriters spend 80% of their time on research before attempting to persuade a target audience, because the words only account for 20% of the effort.  Make sure your scribe conveys that a process is in place for understanding the mindset of the target audience, and gaining insight about the advantages your product or service has in the market place.
  4. Spent time selling in the trenches.Copywriting is nothing more than salesmanship in print. Choose writers with prior sales experience.  Most of the legendary copywriters share this common background, and your writer should too.  This way you can take comfort knowing that they have spent time persuading people with words, and anticipating then handling objections.
  5. Studied direct-response legends.Your freelancers should have invested both time and money into learning the craft of copywriting.  At a bare minimum your writer should have read legends like Olgilvy, Sugarman, and Halbert.  In addition, American Writers and Artist (AWAI) provide training taught by other legendary copywriters, which is considered the staple of the industry- a solid writer is sure to have taken a course or two.
  6. Marketing background. According to Chris Marlow- the self-proclaimed "Queen of Niche Domination"- good freelance copywriters are knowledgeable marketers too, because you may need them to weigh in on the overall strategy.
  7. Dives deep into persona psychology. If your message is trying to appeal to everyone it will appeal to no one.  Good copywriters are keenly aware of this fact, so they align themselves with the mindset of a particular personality type, and speak directly to that person.

Now you have a checklist to aid you in hiring a quality freelance copywriter.  The best part is ... it was developed from a conversation among a consortium of copywriting professionals.
