7 Tips for an Awesome Family Business Environment

  1. HAVE CLEARLY DEFINED ROLES

Avoid overlapping and double-work as well as stepping on each other’s toes and pissing each other off.

2. KNOW STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES

Know your own as well as your family member’s strengths and weaknesses so that each person can contribute to the business by doing what they do best.

3. OPEN, HONEST, DIPLOMATIC COMMUNICATION

...on a regular basis! You need to decide if that is many times a day, weekly or whatever works for you. Do NOT let things stew and boil over into an emotional mess.

4. APPRECIATION & RECOGNITION

Make a point to point out the good stuff and acknowledge when your family members are doing a good job. Pats on the backs go a long way!

5. TAKE TIME OUTSIDE THE OFFICE

Schedule time to spend time doing things you enjoy as a family away from the office and the business! No excuses...enjoy each other!

6. SET CLEAR EXPECTATIONS

Communicate early and often what expectations are of each other and be radically transparent while being open minded. Also, make sure to keep your word; It builds trust and confidence.

7. START EACH DAY WITH GRATITUDE

Focus on what and who you are grateful for and the unconditional love of your family. Remember that you don’t HAVE to be doing this, but instead you CHOOSE to be!
